ROBERT E. TURNBULL.
Robert E. Turnbull, member of the firm of Turnbull & Turnbull,
Regina, is a native of Ontario, his birth having occurred near Ottawa, in
the year 1878. He is the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Green) Turnbull,
the former a native of Scotland and the latter of Ireland. Robert Turn-
bull was a carpenter by trade and in later years took up the occupation
of farming. It was while he was plying his trade in the United States
that he met the young Irishwoman who was to be his wife and after their
marriage they came to Canada, where they made their home all the rest
of their lives. The mother died in Ontario and the father passed away
in Regina, whither he had come in 1908. Five of the seven children born
to this couple are living: Mrs. Swerdfeger, who lives on a farm in Sas-
katchewan; Dr. J. W. Turnbull, a practicing physician of Regina; Miss
Harriett D., a stenographer of Regina; and Robert E. and F. W. Turnbull,
law partners.
Robert E. Turnbull was educated in the public schools of his native
province and the high schools at Van Kleek Hill, Regina and Strathcona,
Alberta. When he had completed his studies he exchanged the role of
pupil for that of teacher and presided over the schoolroom for four years.
In 1902 he went to South Africa with a Canadian contingent for a trip
and some adventure. Following his return to Saskatchewan he took up
the study of law and read under the direction of Mr. McCauseland and
Judge Wood until he was ready to go up for his examinations. He was
called to the bar in 1910 and immediately after began to practice his pro-
fession in the firm of the two men who had been his preceptors while he
was preparing for the law, remaining with them for ten years. In 1920
he formed a legal partnership with his brother, F. W. Turnbull, under
the name of Turnbull & Turnbull. This firm has since enjoyed a large
and important general practice and is rapidly coming to the fore as one
of the most influential of the newer firms in Regina.
In 1904 Mr. Turnbull was united in marriage to Miss Muriel Hope
Lloyd, who was born in Peterborough, Ontario, and educated in her native
province and in Manitoba. They have become the parents of nine chil-
dren: Alice E., a student in the Collegiate Institute; Muriel Helen, who
is also attending the Collegiate Institute; Mona R., an eighth grade
pupil; Eileen M., in the sixth grade; Roberta H., in the fifth grade;
Robert E., Jr., who is completing his second year in school; Albert L.;
and twins, Hugh D. and Neil D. Turnbull.
Mr. Turnbull is a member of the Presbyterian church, while his wife
is affiliated with the Anglican denomination. In politics Mr. Turnbull
votes with the Conservative party. He is past chancellor of the Knights
of Pythias, a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, and also be-
longs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the United Order
of Canadians. Commercial and financial enterprises have never suc-
ceeded in attracting Mr. Turnbull's interest from his profession, to which
he devotes himself unreservedly. He knows, nevertheless, that the man
who plays hard, works hard, and that a well balanced life has its share
of fun and exercise as well as work. He is a member of the Gun Club
and one of its former presidents and is now vice president of the Curliug
Club. These two organizations indicate his recreational interests outside
of his home and family life and give evidence of a good, wholesome in-
terest in the out-of-doors, both in the summer and the winter.
