Submitted by Paul Chapman. Origin of the name of the Wainfleet Country School NE of Empress: The Chapman family in England was an old Lincolnshire area family. In the city of Skegness, Lincolnshire stands the St. Clements Church of England. In the front of the church are two tablets on the wall put up in memory of two Chapman families- my relatives which lived there 400-500 years ago. Have you ever wondered where the Wainfleet name came from of the Country School NE of Empress? My great grand parents lived in the town of Wainfleet All Saints, Lincolnshire in England. My grandfather and his 3 brothers and sister grew up there. They enjoyed roaming the countryside, swimming and fishing in the little Steep River which flowed through town. The Magdalen College where my great aunt took her schooling still stands and is now used as a museum and library. When my grandfather Frederick was 19 the family (now consisting of my Great grandmother and 3 sons and one daughter) immigrated to Empress, Alberta in 1912. My Great Uncle Alf Chapman served as secretary of the Wainfleet Country School at Empress for most all of the years it was in operation. Now you know "the rest of the story".
