New Warren

In 1903 homesteaders from Warren, Minnesota,
established the hamlet of New Warren. It was
located across the intersection, on the south
east corner of section 3-13-23

The rail line originally planned from
Ft. Qu'Appelle to Wood Mountain was abandoned
when the Great Northern Railway constructed
a line between Moose Jaw and Radville in 1911.
The post office and businesses of New Warren
were re-located to the new rail site 3, 2
kilometers south and the town was renamed
Avonlea.

Erected 1999 by the Avonlea Historical Committee.

Webmaster note:
The Great Northern Railway (GN), mainly an American rail company had forays into Canada near the United States - Canada border. GN originally formed in 1879, while the main Canadian rail companies; Canadian National Railway (CNR) formed 1919, and the Canadian Pacifice Railway (CPR) formed c1873. While the Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) 1899-1923 and the Trand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) 1914-1920 were both absorbed into the CNR, the Grand Northern the same cannot be said about GN which ceased to operated by 1970.
