GEORGE J. WRIGHT.
George J. Wright, the present mayor of Assiniboia, has been actively
engaged in business here for some years and is readily conceded a place
among this community's substantial and representative citizens. He was
born in Orillia in the province of Ontario, on the 6th of March, 1880, a
son of Charles P. and Agnes (Donaldson) Wright. For many years the
father engaged in farming and in railroad contracting and is now living
retired at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, where he and his wife are highly
respected and esteemed citizens.
In the pursuit of his education George J. Wright attended the public
schools of his birthplace and in 1899 went to Portage La Prairie, Mani-
toba, where he was actively engaged in railroad construction work, and
in 1912 he came to Saskatchewan and during that year worked on the
Weyburn-Lethbridge Line. In the fall of 1912 he came to Assiniboia and
engaged in draying and heavy teaming, together with a livery and feed
barn and dealt in coal. Later he acquired some land and followed agri-
cultural pursuits for a time. He has since disposed of farm and barn
property and is now selling coal and oil. He has built up an extensive
patronage and is enjoying well-merited success. Mr. Wright has always
maintained an active interest in civic affairs and for five years he served
on the town council. He has been mayor since 1922 and has inaugurated
and brought to completion many movements for the benefit of the com-
munity at large.
Mr. Wright was married to Miss Anna J. McConnell on the 15th of
November, 1908, and they have two children: Charles W. and David M.
Mr. Wright is a member of the Orange Lodge and his religious faith is
that of the Presbyterian church. He is a man of genial and pleasing per-
sonality and his friends are legion.
