JAMES A. ROUTLEDGE, M.D. 

	Dr. James A. Routledge, physician and surgeon, is prominently known
in Unity and the surrounding country as a member of the firm of Drs.
Routledge & Shipley.  He was born in Cargill, Ontario, on the 25th of
July, 1881, a son of George W. and Ann Elizabeth (Vaux) Routledge.
George W. Routledge was born in Cumberland, England, while the mother
was born in Hamilton, Ontario. She can trace her ancestry back in Ire-
land for three hundred years, while the father's people were Cumberland
people as far back as the sixteenth century. George W. Routledge
to Canada when nineteen years of age and engaged in farming in Bruce
county, and there followed agricultural pursuits for the remainder of
life.  His death occurred in September, 1915.  Mrs. Routledge died
March of the year 1916.
	In the pursuit of his preliminary education James A. Routledge at-
tended the public schools of Cargill and received his collegiate training
at Walkerton, Ontario, completing his education at the age of eighteen
years. He then went to Malta, Montana, where he worked in a store for
five years and in the fall of 1904 returned to Toronto and graduated from
Toronto University in 1908, with the M. D. degree.  In the same year
he came to Unity, which town had just been started, there being but
houses here at the time. He has since practiced here and in September
1918, took into partnership with him Dr. E. E. Shipley and they have
an extensive practice under the name of Routledge & Shipley. They have
very modern offices with all of the latest and most complete X-ray and
other equipment.  They also have a clinical laboratory.  Dr. Routledge
is interested in farming and owns and operates two and a quarter sec-
tions of fine land in this district.  He also has other land and in 1923
had eleven hundred acres in grain.
	In June, 1911, Dr. Routledge was married to Miss Margaret McIn-
tosh and they have become parents of two children: Margaret Muriel,
whose birth occurred on the 2d of July, 1912, and who died in January,
1921; and James Holden, born on the 25th of March, 1916.
	Dr. Routledge is a stanch Conservative and has been prominent in
party affairs. He was overseer of the village of Unity before it became
a town and was Conservative candidate in 1915 for the Federal House.
He resigned the position of candidate prior to election, realizing that he
would either have to sacrifice his profession to his political aspirations
or vice versa and the decision was made in favor of his profession. He
was a member of the town council in 1920 and 1921 and is essentially
public-spirited, never being too busy to lend his aid in the furtherance
of any movement for the benefit of the community. He is a member of
the Canadian and Saskatchewan Medical Associations and fraternally is
identified with the Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and
the Sons of England.  He is a member and on the executive committee
of the Unity Golf Club and is an enthusiastic curler. He is particularly
fond of hunting and every fall goes into the north country after big
game.  The religious faith of Dr. Routledge is that of the Anglican
church.
