JAMES GUY PENNEY.
James Guy Penney, manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia, is one of Prince Albert's leading citizens. A native of Newfoundland, his birth occurred at St. John's, on the 17th of September, 1892, and he is a son of Hon. William Frederick and Julia (Guy) Penney, natives of Newfound- land. Hon. William W. Penney was one of the outstanding figures in the political life of his community, and for a number of years was the speaker in the house of assembly in St. John's. He was also a success- ful business man, conducting a mercantile store in that city for many years. James Guy Penney was reared to young manhood in St. John's and there received his early education. Subsequently he attended the Pres- byterian College and later took a banking course at Queen's University. At the age of eighteen years he started as a junior clerk wIth the Bank of Nova Scotia and has since been in the employ of this institution, hav- ing worked in all departments and in all provinces with the exception of British Columbia and New Brunswick. In 1915 he was made manager of the West End branch at Calgary, prior to that having been employed in the head office in Toronto. In 1916 he came to Prince Albert as man- ager here and has since satisfactorily performed the duties of this im- portant position. There is no phase of banking with which Mr. Penney is not thoroughly familiar and the success he has achieved is well-merited, for it is the result of close application to the thing at hand, conscientious performance of every duty assigned him, laudable ambition and innate ability. Mr. Penney is called the dean of bankers of Prince Albert. Aside from his managerial duties here he has the supervision of the bank at Parkside, Saskatchewan. On the 26th of June, 1918, Mr. Penney was married to Miss Ruth Davis and they have become the parents of two children: James Beverly, born in November, 1919; and William Lloyd, born in May, 1923. Mr. Penney has held many important positions in commercial circles and at the same time has found spare time to do his share in promoting the de- velopment and improvement of the community. He was the first vice president of the Prince Albert Agricultural Society and for three years past has been treasurer of the local Board of Trade. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club. His religious faith is that of the Presby- terian church. He is a member and director of the Keewatin Club and an active member of the Prince Albert Golf Club, in the organization of which he was an active factor and of which he served as secretary-treas- urer for one year, and was a director two years. Mr. Penney is also con- nected with the Prince Albert Tennis Club. Bibliography follows:
