LORNE CROOKENDEN PATERSON.
Saskatoon numbers among her foremost citizens Lorne Crookenden
Paterson, Acting Agent for the Dominion Land office, who has well ap-
pointed offices in the Connaught building. He was born in Hamilton,
Ontario, on the 8th of January, 1888, a son of Thomas and Annie (Crook-
enden) Paterson. The father was born near London, Ontario, while
the mother was born in London, England. For many years the father
conducted a grocery store at Thedford, Ontario. Prior to that time he
was western agent for the Confederation Life. In 1901 lie went to De-
roit, Michigan, and conducted a grocery store there until 1911, when he
came to Saskatoon and has since been in the same line of business in this
city. He is a progressive and highly esteemed business man and well
its the success that has come to him. Mrs. Paterson died on the 4th
December, 1919.
Lorne Crookenden Paterson received his education in the public
schools of Stratford and Thedford, Ontario. He removed to Detroit with
his parents in 1901 and worked in the Hunter & Hunter department
in that city as office boy for some time. He early formed habits of
industry and integrity and worked his way up to the position of book-
keeper. Subsequently he resigned his position with Hunter & Hunter
and became a messenger for the Wabash & Canadian Pacific Railroad.
He worked his way up to way-biller, which position he held for some
time. For four years he was in the employ of Hiram Walker & Son, dis-
tillers, and in 1910 he came to Saskatoon and went to work for the Grand
Trunk Pacific Railroad as bill clerk, but had held that position only one
month when, on the 17th of May, 1910, he was appointed to a clerkship
in the Dominion Land office. Subsequently he became an accountant in
the office and in April of the year 1919, was appointed Assistant Agent.
On the 21st of October, 1922, Mr. Murdock A. Mclmes, the Agent, died
and Mr. Paterson succeeded him, and he is proving his ability and fitness
for the office. Mr. Paterson is a self-made man in the truest sense of the
word and his progress in the business world is the result of close appli-
cation to the thing at hand, intelligently directed efforts and laudable
ambition.
On the 30th of June, 1913, Mr. Paterson was married to Miss Hilda
Cormick, a daughter of Thomas E. and Joyce (Peake) Cormick, natives
of Birkenhead, England. Mr. and Mr~. Cormick came to Saskatoon from
England in 1907, and Mr. Cormick is now associated with the Land Titles
office. To Mr. and Mrs. Paterson three children have been born: Thelma
Lucille, born on the 5th of August, 1915; Joyce Hilda, the second, born on
the 17th of May, 1917; and Betty Mae, born on the 11th of September,1920.
The religious faith of Mr. Paterson is that of the Presbyterian church,
in which he is a zealous worker. He has no fraternal affiliations and
belongs to few social organizations. He is essentially a home man and
finds his greatest recreation in the company of his family. He is public-
spirited and is well informed on all important questions and issues of
the day. He is ever cognizant of the duties and responsibilities as well
as the privileges of good citizenship and has been helpful in the promo-
tion of many movements for the benefit of the community.
