WILLIAM ROSS MACKENZIE.
As founder and manager of the MacKenzie Supply Company, William
Ross MacKenzie is a prominent figure in the fuel and building supply
trade of Regina. He was born in Halifax in 1885, of Scotch parentage.
His father, Alexander MacKenzie, is a native of the Scotch Highlands
and was brought to Cape Breton Island by his parents at the age of six.
His mother, who was Jane Tillery Ross before her marriage, was born
in Dunfermline, Scotland, and came to Hamilton, Ontario, as a child.
She was married to Mr. MacKenzie in Halifax, where Mr. MacKenzie
was the agent for the Dominion Railway & Steamship Company. He is
now retired and resides at Lethbridge, Alberta, whither the family moved
in 1908. He is a Liberal in politics and for some years has been a mem-
ber of the Masonic fraternity. The family has always been identified
with the Presbyterian church. William R. MacKenzie is the youngest
child and only son in a family of three children. His older sister, Jean,
is a nurse in Lethbridge, while the other sister, Miss Anna, lives at home.
William Ross MacKenzie's first position after completing his educa-
tion in the Halifax County Academy and the public schools of Halifax
was in his father's office, where he was employed for two months. He
came to western Canada in 1903, when he was eighteen years old, to take
advantage of the opportunities for rapid advancement offered by the
new country. In Winnipeg he was employed in the Eastern Township
Bank for a number of years, following which he went to Lethbridge in
1908, when his family located there. In Lethbridge he was secretary
treasurer of the Royal Colliers for three years. In partnership with
J. B. Turney, Mr. MacKenzie embarked in business in 1911, as a dealer
mining and mill supplies, but a year later came to Regina from Leth-
bridge to found the MacKenzie Supply Company. This company has
developed an extensive business along the lines of builders' supplies and
coal and has become one of the prosperous concerns of its kind in thecity.
On the 11th of June, 1910, Mr. MacKenzie was married to Miss Stella
Maude Webster, who was born in Stratford, Ontario, where she was
reared and educated. Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie have a daughter, Kath-
arine, who was born on March 24, 1913. Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie are
members of the Knox Presbyterian church and Mr. MacKenzie is a Mason
and a Knight of Pythias. He is affiliated with the Liberal party, in
which he has been active in behalf of his friends, although he has never
held nor desired public office for himself. As a charter member of the
Rotary Club he was one of the leaders in establishing the organization
in Regina and has been one of its enthusiastic workers ever since. His
clubs are the Assiniboia and Wascana Country Clubs. For recreation
this business man turns to golf, which he plays whenever he can take
the time from his many duties, while motoring provides him with another
enjoyable form of diversion and one that can be shared with the rest of
his family. The social qualities with which he is endowed by a generous
nature make Mr. MacKenzie a well liked person in his clubs and in a wide
circle of friends and acquaintances, but he allows no outside interests to
interfere with the conscientious performance of his business duties.
Whatever of success he has enjoyed has come to him through his own
efforts and his steadfast devotion to the task in hand, thus his energy
and perseverance have brought him to the place he now occupies among
the capable business men of his city.
