JOHN E. MACDERMID.
A prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Saskatoon is John E. MacDermid, who is a member of the well known law firm of Ferguson, MacDermid & MacDermid, with offices in the Bank of Commerce build- ing. Mr. MacDermid was born in Martintown, Ontario, on the 23d of July, 1892, a son of Peter H. and Anna (Ross) MacDermid, natives of Ontario, extended mention of whom is made in the sketch of their son, F. F. MacDermid, appearing elsewhere in this work. In the pursuit of his education John E. MacDermid attended the pub- lic schools of Martintown, Ontario, and subsequently enrolled in the Corh- wall Collegiate Institute, graduating therefrom in 1908. Two years later he came to Saskatoon and took up the study of law with J. L. Jordan. Later he entered his brother's office and there completed his course. He was admitted to the bar on the 16th of June, 1916, while serving with the Canadian army overseas. Prior to the Great war Mr. MacDermid was a member of the militia and soon after its outbreak he became identified with the Eleventh Battalion. In August, 1914, he was sent overseas as lieutenant of the battalion and he returned to this country in July, 1918, with the rank of captain. He rendered his country valiant service and participated in many of the important battles of the war. In the fall of 1918 he received his honorable discharge and then commenced the active practice of his profession in association with his brother. Some time later he was made trust officer of National Trust Company and was activ~ in that important capacity until March, 1922, when he became a member of the firm of Ferguson, MacDermid & MacDermid. They are promi- nent barristers and solicitors of Saskatoon and stand high at the provin- cial bar. On the 8th of November; 1916, Mr. MacDermid was married to Miss Marian Henn, a daughter of Sir Sydney and Laura (Shanklin) Henn, the former a native of Manchester, England, and the latter of Concepcion, Chile, South America. Mrs. MacDermid was born in Chile. Her father is a member of the British parliament and his home is in Blunham, Bed- fordsire, England. Mr. and Mrs. MacDermid are parents of three chil- dren: Ruby, born on the 23d of August, 1917; Edgar, born on the 18th of October, 1919; and Jean, born on the 24th of January, 1921. The political allegiance of Mr. MacDermid is given to the Liberal party and he is a firm believer in the principles of that party as factors in good government. He has never sought nor desired political prefer- ment but is public-spirited and supports those measures which uplift and promote the growth of Saskatoon. Mr. MacDermid is secretary of the Canadian Club, a member of the Saskatoon Club and along strictly professional lines holds membership in the Canadian Bar Association. Saskatchewan Bar Association and Saskatoon Bar Association, in which latter association he is secretary. Socially he is identified with the River- side Country Club. Mr. MacDermid is a member of the Presbyterian church. He is popular in professional and business circles and his friends are legion. Bibliography follows:
