WILLIAM J. LEAHY.
Kerrobert is proud to number among her representative citizens Wil-
liam J. Leahy, Judge of the District court. He was born at Halifax,
Nova Scotia, on the 8th of December, 1875, a son of D. J. and Eliza
(O'Brien) Leahy, natives of Nova Scotia, the former of whom engaged in
the wholesale mercantile business throughout his life at Halifax and
was one of the most successful business men of his day. He died in May
of the year 1885. Mrs. Leahy survives her husband and is residing in
Aliston, Massachusetts.
William J. Leahy received his education in the private schools of his
birthplace and subsequently attended the Mount St. Louis Institute at
Montreal. He was graduated in law from the Dalhousie University in
1898 and began practice in Halifax, where he remained until the fall of
1907, when he came west and located in Regina. He practiced in that
city from 1907 until 1913 and in the latter year was appointed to the
bench, taking over the duties of his new office in November. He has
continued to serve as District Court Judge for the Judicial District of
Kerrobert and for the past four years he has also been the District Court
Judge for the Judicial District of Wilkie, formerly Scott. He is a man
of high intellectual attainments and inspires all with whom he comes
into contact with confidence in his ability.
Judge Leahy is well informed on all important questions and issues
of the day and is a cooperant factor in the development and improvement
of this community. He was vice president of the Dalhousie Alumni
Association one year, and was secretary of that body a number of years,
and he was secretary of the Junior Conservative Association of Halifax.
The Judge is musically inclined and has been secretary of the Halifax
Symphony Choral Association and has served as president of the local
band. He is interested in all outdoor sports and is honorary president
of the Kerrobert Golf Club. Fraternally he is identified with the Knights
of Columbus and is a past chancellor of the Regina Council. He is a
consistent communicant of the Catholic church and was an active mem-
ber of the Halifax Charitable Irish Society. The judge possesses the
genius for making and keeping friends. He is unmarried.
