ARCHIE L. JOHNSON, D. D. S.
Dr. Archie L. Johnson, a well known dentist of Moose Jaw and veteran of the Great war, is a native of Strathroy, Ontario, his birth having oc- curred there in 1886. His parents, Hugh D. and Victoria (Laughton) Johnson, were both born in Ontario, which was their lifelong home. The mother passed away in 1916. The father still resides in his native prov- ince, at the age of eighty. Hugh D. Johnson has been connected with the school system of Ontario for over sixty years and for a long period was a school inspector. As a member of the Baptist church he has been very active, serving a long term as presiding elder. Fraternally he is identi- fied with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and he has always voted with the Liberal party. Four of his six children are living: Mrs. Sad- ler, wife of a doctor of Sarnia, Ontario; Dr. Archie L. of this review; Kenneth M.,, a dentist of Winnipeg; and Mrs. Hugh Rorison, wife of an implement dealer of Moose Jaw. After completing the course in the Strathroy Collegiate Institute, Archie L. Johnson entered the dental department of Toronto University, from which he graduated as a member of the class of 1908. The young dentist began the practice of his profession in Hartney, Manitoba, remain- ing there for five years. As he gained in experience Dr. Johnson began to look for a wider field and a location that offered more favorable oppor- tunities for professional advancement. He decided upon Moose Jaw as his future location, after, looking over the situation in western Canada, and came here in 1913. He has never had occasion to regret having taken this step, for in spite of the fact that his progress was delayed by nearly four years of service in the army during the Great war he has built up an excellent practice and ranks high among his colleagues in his profes- sion. When the opportunity has presented itself the Doctor has taken graduate work along lines that have interested him and by constant study and research work has kept himself well abreast of the progress being made in his branch of science. That he is well thought of by the other dentists of the province is demonstrated by his election to the presidency of the Saskatchewan Provincial Dental Society in 1921, prior to which he had served as vice president of the organization. The year that he was president of the provincial society he was the presiding officer of the local association. Dr. Johnson enlisted in the Sixty-eighth Battalion, for service in the Great war, on the 6th of July, 1915, and in 1917 was sent overseas as major and second in command of the Two Hundred and Twenty~ninth Battalion. Major Johnson remained overseas on active duty until April 17, 1919, several months after the signing of the armistice had brought an end to actual fighting. Returning to Moose Jaw, he resumed his prac- tice on July 6, 1919, exactly four years from the day he enlisted in the Canadian forces. In 1911 Dr. Johnson was married to Miss Myrtle Meredith Blair of Hartney, Manitoba. They have one child, a son, Kenneth M., who is attending school. The religious affiliations of the family are with the Presbyterian church and Dr. Johnson is a Royal Arch Mason. He also belongs to the Prairie Club, United Service Club and the Moose Jaw Golf Club. The popular Scotch game of golf is his chief source of recreation and exercise during the summer months and he spends much of his leisure time on the links. Since coming to Moose Jaw, Dr. Johnson has always manifested a lively interest in the civic affairs of the community, aiding in the various projects for the advancement of Moose Jaw, and is now serving on the city council as an alderman.
