ALEXANDER WALLACE HUTCHINSON.
 


	Alexander Wallace Hutchinson is prominently identified with the legal
circles of Saskatoon as a member of the firm of McCraney, Hutchinson,
Carroll & Sheppard, which maintains well appointed offices in the Bower-
man block. He was born at Port Rowan, Ontario, on the 20th of January,
1878, a son of John William and Sarah (Woodward) Hutchinson, natives
of Port Rowan. In early life the father engaged in agricultural pursuits
and farmed throughout his active life in that province. He is now living
retired, at the age of eighty-eight years, and is one of the highly respected
and esteemed citizens of Port Rowan. Mrs. Hutchinson died in February,
1921, in her seventieth year.
	In the pursuit of his education Alexander Wallace Hutchinson attend-
ed the public and high schools of his birthplace and also the rural schools
in the vicinity of the home farm. He was a student at Toronto University
for one year and also spent one year at Queen's University, and two years
at the University of Manitoba, from which latter institution he graduated
in 1902, with the B. A. degree. He then studied law with James McKay,
now Supreme Court justice. Mr. McKay lived at Prince Albert and Mr.
Hutchinson was admitted to the bar there in 1905. Subsequently he en-
tered into partnership with George E. McCraney at Rosthern, Saskatch-
ewan, with whom he came west in 1902.  Mr. McCraney opened the
first law office in Rosthern and also the first in Saskatchewan.  Their
legal business was transacted under the firm name of McCraney & Hutch-
inson and they had an extensive clientele in both towns until 1909, when
they moved permanently to Saskatoon and concentrated their attention
upon their practice here. After a few months they admitted P. E. Mac-
kenzie, now King's Bench Judge at Regina and the firm was McCraney,
Mackenzie & Hutchinson until 1921.  In that year Mr. Mackenzie was
made judge and on the 18th of March of that year Mr. MeCraney passed
away. On November 1 Mr. Hutchinson took into partnership R. Carroll
and Fred A. Sheppard. Mr. Hutchinson brought to the profession innate
ability and thorough preparation and he has won a position of prominence
among the foremost barristers and solicitors of the province. Mr. Hutch-
inson has always been interested in farming and he owns and operates
considerable land in this province, and for some time engaged in raising
pure-blooded polled Angus cattle.
	On the 6th of October, 1908, Mr. Hutchinson was married to Miss
Elizabeth Ellen Stewart, a daughter of John and Jane L. (Robinson)
Stewart, natives of Scotland, who came to Canada at an early day and
were among the pioneers of Saskatchewan, locating here prior to the
Rebellion. During the Rebellion Mr. Stewart organized a volunteer com-
pany at Prince Albert and served throughout the period. He engaged in
the mercantile business in Prince Albert for many years and was mayor
for eight years, holding that position at the time of his death in August,
1894. Mrs. Stewart is living in Edinburgh, Scotland. For several years
after the death of her husband Mrs. Stewart conducted the mercantile
business and cared for her six children. She made a success of the store
and in 1908 disposed of it at a substantial profit, and then returned to
Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson have the following children: Jean,
whose birth occurred on the 29th of November, 1909; Grace, who was
born on the 29th of January, 1911; Hope, who was born on the 16th of
May, 1915; Gwendolyn, who was born on the 26th of June, 1919; and
John, whose birth occurred on the 28th of October, 1921.
	Since attaining his majority Mr. Hutchinson has given his political
allegiance to the Conservative party, having firm belief in the principles
of that party as factors in good government. His religious faith is that
of the Anglican church. Along strictly professional lines Mr. Hutchinson
holds membership in the Canadian Bar Association, the Saskatchewan
Bar Association and the Saskatoon Bar Association. Fraternally he is
identified with the Masons and the Woodmen of the World. Socially he
is connected with the Saskatoon Club, the Riverside Country Club and
the Canadian Club.
