J. HARVEY HEARN.
A prominent barrister and solicitor of Wadena is J. Harvey Hearn, who was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on the 15th of October, 1882, a son of James and Elizabeth (Miller) Hearn. The father was engaged in the practice of law for many years and built up an extensive and important clientele in Sydney. In the pursuit of his education J. Harvey Hearn attended the public schools of Nova Scotia and in due time was graduated from high school. He then enrolled in St. Francis Xavier University and was graduated from that institution with the B. A. degree in 1904. Upon the comple- tion of his literary education he took up the study of law in Dalhousie University and that institution conferred the LL. B. degree upon him in 1908. Immediately thereafter he came to Wadena and has since prac- ticed here. He was admitted to the Saskatchewan Law Society on the 28th of April, 1908. His preparation of his cases is thorough and exhaus- tive, his presentation clear, forceful and logical. He is seldom, if ever, at fault in the citation of principle or precedent, and the strength of his defense is found in his correct application of legal principles to the point at issue. He has been town solicitor since taking up residence in Wadena and he discharges the duties of that office with an efficiency and ease that commands respect. Mr. Hearn was prominent in all activities during the World war. He organized the First Wadena Independent Company in 1915 and was appointed lieutenant-colonel. In 1916 he organized the Two Hundred and Fourteenth Battalion and with this battalion went to England. Subsequently he turned over his command and returned to Wadena and resumed his practice in 1917. In 1914 Mr. Hearn was married to Miss Sarah Henretty Hearn, a native of Minnesota, United States of America. To their union three chil- dren have been born: Elizabeth F., James H. and Robert L. Mrs. Hearn is prominent in club and social circles. The religious faith of Mr. Hearn is that of the Roman Catholic church. He holds no membership in lodges. He has always maintained an active interest in local politics and was mayor of Wadena in 1913 and 1914 and was again elected to that office in 1921. His administrations were marked by continued development and improvement in the community. He contested as a Conservative the Hum- boldt Riding in 1911 and was defeated; and Wadena in 1912, and was defeated by a very small majority. He was nominated in 1917 for the Humboldt Federal Constituency but withdrew. Aside from his political and legal interests Mr. Hearn has always been interested in agricultural pursuits and owns considerable valuable farm land near Wadena. Mr. Hearn is ever a loyal and devoted citizen and he well merits the confidence and esteem accorded him by his fellowmen. Bibliography follows:
