JOHN CHAMARD.
 



	John Chamard of Saskatoon occupies a position of prominence as dis-
trict superintendent of the postal service here, having well appointed of-
fices in the Canada building. He was born at St. Denis, River Richelieu,
Quebec, on the 20th of May, 1856, a son of John and Louise Margaret
(Morrison) Chamard, the former a native of Riviere Ouelle, Quebec, and
the latter of Berthier, Quebec. For many years John Chamard, Sr., was
engaged in the provision business and later conducted and operated a sum-
mer resort hotel at Murray Bay, Quebec, which was known as the Lorne
House. His death occurred in November of the year 1879, and Mrs. Cham-
ard passed away in October, 1900. Both were members of old and dis-
tinguished families of the Dominion of Canada.
	The public schools of Montreal afforded John Chamard his early edu-
cation and after putting his textbooks aside he clerked in that city for
some time. He also worked in his father's hotel and in February, 1879,
accepted a position in the post office department at Ottawa as clerk. In
1890 be was appointed assistant post office inspector of the Ottawa Divi-
sion and resided in Ottawa for twenty-six years. In 1907 he was pro-
moted to the position of post office inspector for the Saskatoon Division,
which was being established and which is the youngest division and last
established in the west. He took charge of the division in January, 1908.
In 1920 titles were changed and he was made district superintendent.
When this division was first established it only took in Saskatchewan. To-
day it includes Saskatchewan, part of Manitoba and part of Alberta. Mr.
Chamard is kept very busy discharging the duties of his important office
and has proven himself to be the right man for the place. In Septem-
ber, 1910, Mr. Chamard was married to Miss Marie Elizabeth McLean,
a daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Davis) McLean, the former a native
of the province of Ontario and the latter of England. In early life the
father took up the study of medicine and he practiced at Ayton, Ontario,
for many years. He won prominence among the foremost members of
the medical profession of his day. His death occurred in 1903, but Mrs.
McLean died in 1900.  Mr. and Mrs. Chamard are the parents of six
children: Euscbie, the wife of Pierre Tranblay, a resident of Murray Bay,
Quebec; and Petronella, John, William, Christine and Mary, all residing
at home.
	The religious faith of Mr. Chamard is that of the Catholic church. He
is an active member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and of the Union
St. Joseph. He was president of the Artisans Society and of the Union
St. Pierre for some time. While a resident of Ottawa, Ontario, he was
president of the St. Jean Baptiste Society.  Mr. Chamard is a public-
spirited citizen and lends his influence to all movements for the public
weal, and he is well informed on all important questions and issues of
the day.  His friends throughout the district and province are legion
and Saskatoon is proud to number him among her foremost citizens.
