A representative member of the Saskatchewan bar is Daniel Buckles,
King's Counsel, a prominent barrister and solicitor of Swift Current and
senior member of the firm of Buckles & Thompson. He was born in
Margaree, Nova Scotia, on the 11th of April, 1876, a son of Archibald and
Bridget (Oates) Buckles.
In the pursuit of his education Daniel Buckles attended the public
schools of his birthplace and subsequently enrolled in Dalhousie Uni-
versity. He took up the study of law and was called to the Nova~ Scotia
bar in 1907. He practiced at Sidney Mines, Nova Scotia, from 1907 to
1911, and in the latter year was called to the Saskatchewan bar and ap-
pointed Crown Prosecutor of the Judicial District of Swift Current on the
1st of May, 1913. Mr. Buckles was successful in the practice of his
chosen profession from the start and subsequently he entered into part-
nership with Mr. Thompson, the firm becoming Buckles & Thompson.
They handle much important litigation before the courts and have an
extensive and representative clientele. In January of the year 1919 Mr.
Buckles was appointed King's Counsel. He is one of the members of the
provincial bar whose earnest labor and ability have won recognition
and secured his continuous advancement.
In Swift Current, in 1912, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Buckles
to Miss Edna Murray Milton, of Nova Scotia. Mrs. Buckles is a woman
of culture and refinement and she is prominent in the club and social
circles. Since attaining his majority Mr. Buckles has given his political
allegiance to the Liberal party, having firm belief in the principles of
that party as factors in good government. While never an office seeker,
he is essentially public-spirited and his cooperation has ever been counted
upon for the benefit and welfare of the community in the long period in
which he has made his home in Swift Current. He is a consistent mem-
ber of the Catholic church and belongs to the Catholic Mutual Benefit
Association, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Fraternal Order of
Eagles, and is an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He is a
member of the Canadian Club and in August, 1916, was elected a fellow
of the Royal Colonial Institute. He was elected a bencher of the Law
Society of Saskatchewan, in November, 1919, and in January, 1920, was
elected president of the Swift Current Bar Association. For recreation
from his many professional activities Mr. Buckles turns to the great
outdoors and is an expert huntsman and rifleman. When he started in
professional life he realized that "there is no excellence without labor,"
and also that "there is no royal road to wealth." He was willing to earn
his success and has used every honorable means for its attainment.
