DAVID M. BALTZAN, M.D., C. M. Photograph
Dr. David M. Baltzan, a leading representative of the medical profes-
sion in Saskatoon, was born in Roumania, in May, 1897, a son of Moses
A. and Yetta (Bondar) Baltzan, likewise natives of that country, who
came to Canada and located in Saskatchewan in 1904, taking up a home-
stead at Lipton, which the father brought to a highly cultivated state, and
was active in the operation of that land for many years, making it one
of the show places of the community. Mr. Baltzan finally retired from
active life and resided in Saskatoon until his death on the 14th of Septem-
ber, 1922, when fifty-four years of age. His demise occurred in New York
city, whither he had gone for medical aid. Mr. Baltzan was one of the
pioneer Jewish farmers in the province and was held in high confidence
and esteem by all who knew him.
David M. Baltzan was eight years of age when he came~to Canada with
his parents. He received his education in the rural schools of Saskatche-
wan, attended school in Lipton, was graduated from high school in Saska-
toon and is the first one from that school to have graduated in medicine.
His boyhood ambition was to enter the medical profession and upon the
completion of his literary training he enrolled in McGill University, from
which institution he was graduated with the class of 1920. He then took
postgraduate work in New York and in the latter part of 1920 commenced
the practice of his chosen profession in Saskatoon, where he has since
practiced and has built up an extensive and lucrative patronage. The suc-
cess Dr. Baltzan has achieved is the result of his own intelligently directed
efforts and innate ability. With his parents he survived the hardships of
the pioneer days in Canada and some times he had to walk a distance of
twenty miles for the mail. Dr. Baltzan has a brother, Harry L., who was
born in January, 1901, and is a graduate of the University of Alberta.
David M. Baltzan is not married and his mother keeps house for him in
Saskatoon.
Along strictly professional lines Dr. Baltzan holds membership in the
Canadian Medical Association, the Saskatchewan Medical Association and
the Saskatoon Academy of Medicine. He is president of the Independent
Order of B'nai B'rith of Saskatoon. The political allegiance of the Doctor
is given to the Liberal party and he is a firm believer in the principles
of that party as factors in good government. He is ever ready to lend
his aid in the furtherance of any movement for the upbuilding of the
community's interests and he is well informed on all important questions
and issues of the day. Dr. Baltzan well merits the respect and esteem ac-
corded him and Saskatoon is indeed proud to number him among her
representative medical men and foremost citizens.
