Some very early newspapers included the following. The 'Nor Wester' was started 1859 at Fort Garry (a Hudson Bay fort located at the present site of Winnipeg, Manitoba) and served the North West Territories before provinces were incorporated.1 The Prince Albert Times and Saskatchewan Review were both established in 1882. The Moose Jaw News was established in 1883. The Regina Leader was established by Nicholas Flood Davin in 1883.23 Ned Powers started the Saskatoon Sentinel in 1884.4 Le Métis was a periodical begun in 1888 by Lt. Gov. Royal.5 Sometime in the 1880's the Qu'Appelle Vidette was started.9 In 1896, theYorkton Enterprise served the Yorkton area.10 Between 1914-1930, The Morning Leader offered provincial public accounts from the provincial capital in a weekly newspaper based in Saskatoon began circa 1909 followed by the Saskatoon Newspaper the Daily Star in 1912.6 The White Mud Leader was begun by the White Mud settlement which was established in 1890. Saltcoats offered a newspaper named Siftings later followed by the Herald7 Der Courier was a German language newspaper based out of Regina and begun around 1915.8 In Regina, the Evening Standard and Province and Daily Post were issued in the early 1900s.11
However in the early days of settlement before the industrial revolution and the advent of motorized transport, the posting of birth, or obituary announcements was very small. When there was an announcement of a community member passing, however, it may be a quite lengthy article for the newspaper in this early era. Travel via horse and cart was very hard especially in the winter months during cold or snowy weather. The imperative for a family member to venture out for a day long or overnight ride in harsh conditions was not great for a newspaper announcement. Travel to school was even limited, and many school months were only six months over the milder summer months, and one room school houses would close down in the harsh winters. The 1940s saw all weather roads improving across the province and a large quantity of families possesing motorized transport for travel. It was after this time of easier travel and the advent of telecommunications with telephone that announcements became a more regular occurence.
The Saskatchewan Archives Board has been microfilming newspapers since the 1940s, and holds a large collection of Saskatchewan daily and weekly newspapers. the collection begins with the Saskatchewan Herald out of Battleford, first published in 1878. "The Historical Directory of Saskatchewan Newspapers, 1878-1983 (Saskatchewan Archives Reference Series No. 4, 1984) lists all known newspapers published in the province and identifies those available at the SAB." There is also a listing of those newspapers on microfilm held by the Canadian Library and archives.
