 Norwegians had the highest settlement rate in the area now known as Saskatchewan. They were a very large minority group here. Mattias Anderson of Bulyea , Sk was a homesteader of Norwegian descent who advocated a proper Medical Plan in Canada. Matt was born in the Fjordane area of coastal Norway in one one the tiniest villages in Norway called Hoddevik. The Matt Anderson family lived near Bulyea, Saskatchewan and advocated a proper Medical Plan in Saskatchewan for many years. Mattias Anderson was mayor of McKillop Rural Municipality and it was here where he introduced a Municipal Medical Plan. This idea spread to other Municipalities in Saskatchewan and several others adopted this program including Spalding R.M., Sask. among many others. Tommy Douglas and the CCF Government elected in year 1944 copied this program for all of Saskatchewan in year 1947. This became the Saskatchewan Medical Plan of year 1962 - the first in Canada. This in turn was adopted by the Federal Government to become the Canadian Medical System of today.

Glen Mary was an early settlement near Prince Albert Prince Albert Regional Gen Web Early Saskatchewan records show that there were Saskatchewan settlements named from Norway, such as Norge, Dovre, Lillestrom Saskatchewan.
The original Norwegian settlement near Watrous was named Mandal. It moved 1 mile west when the CPR laid line, and the town name changed to Watrous, Sk. The Norwegian Lutheran Church was established in Watrous, and Delisle, Sk settlement communities. Norwegian settlement is so strong in the Village of Weldon they hold an annual Syttende Mai Fest, a Norwegian Heritage celebration. Many folks settled around Naicam and Birch Hills celebrate the Norwegian Independence Day,May 17. Settlers starting school at Cluse Valley (Weyburn, Sk area) often spoke only Norwegian. These places, along with Dovre, and Norwegian Grove, Outlook, Hanley, Elbow, Sk are all Norwegian settlements of the Saskatoon Regional Gen Web Pages
In the Kamsack Gen Web Region was a settlement in Rose Valley, Sk, and farms from Preeceville to Kelvington, Sk. In the south west section of Saskatchewan Swift Current Gen Web Region , Norwegian settlements sprang up around Simmie, Climax and Robsart. Nearby in the Weyburn Gen Web Area was a Norwegian settlement near Lake Alma, Sk as well as at Lajord, Saskatchewan. Silvia Vilches has kindly submitted information on her familial roots at Lajord, a Norwegian Settlement. Moose Jaw Gen Web region was the location of an early Norwegian settlement named Norge. And there was also another Norwegian area in the Kindersley Gen Web area settling the area from Swift Current to Kyle, Sk.
