GEORGE H. WHITLOCK.
George H. Whitlock, managing director of the firm of Whitlock &
Marlatt, Limited, of Moose Jaw, dealers in building supplies, came to
this city over twenty years ago in connection with his work for the Ca-
nadian Pacific Railway. For a number of years he has been interested
in his present business, which reached such large proportions about three
years after coming here that he resigned his position with the railroad
to devot his entire time to its management. He now does a large busi-
ness supplying the building trades and ranks as one of the successful
business men of the city. By birth he is an Englishman, the son of Henry
and Elizabeth (Stevenson) Whitlock, natives of Sheffield, who came to
Canada in 1881 and settled in Quebec, where the father engaged in busi-
ness as a masonry contractor. George H. Whitlock was five years of age
when the family came to America, his birth having occurred in Sheffield
in 1878. Henry Whitlock was a Conservative in his political affiliations
and adhered to the faith of the Anglican church, as did his wife. He
was the son of Edward Whitlock, a general contractor, who lived and died
in England while his wife claimed as her paternal grandfather, Robert
Stevenson inventor of a steam engine. In 1909 the Whitlocks moved out
to Calgary, in which city they lived the remainder of their lives. They
are survived by five of their seven children, of whom George H. is the
eldest.
George H. Whitlock grew up under the shelter of the paternal roof
and was educated in the high school and the Collegiate Institute of Farn-
ham, Quebec, following which he set out to make his own way in the
world as an employe of the Canadian Pacific Railway, working in the
stores department in Farnham. From his home town he was transferred
to Montreal, where he remained seven years and after that period spent
some time doing relief work for the company, which took him all over the
eastern provinces. In 1902 he was sent to Moose Jaw and has made this
city his home ever since. For three years after he came west Mr. Whit-
lock remained in the employ of the Canadian Pacific line, but in 1905 he
entered into business on his own account as a member of the firm of
Elson & Whitlock, wholesale dealers in builders materials. Two years
later Mr. Marlett, his present associate, bought out Mr. Elsom's interests,
the firm name changing at that time to Whitlock & Marlett, Limited.
Mr. Whitlock developed this enterprise, devoting all his time to the man-
agement of it, and it has amply rewarded him for all his efforts. He is
now managing director of the company and the man largely responsible
for its success. The business is a large one and consists of a brisk trade
in all sorts of building materials with the single exception of lumber, and
in addition the firm has a large fuel trade.
On the 24th of September, 1901, Mr. Whitlock was united in marriage
to Miss Ella Maude Truax, who was born in Farnham, Quebec. Mr. and
Mrs. Whitlock are members of the Anglican church. Mr. Whitlock has
been very active in the Moose Jaw Rotary Club, serving on the executive
committee for two years and as vice president in 1922. In the work of
the local board of trade he has also been of great assistance and was
chosen vice president of that organization for the 1921 term. Politically
he is classed with the Conservatives. A number of years ago, in 1904
and 1905, he served on the city council, but aside from this office he has
never taken a prominent part in politics-nor public affairs. He is an
enthusiastic curler and in the summer months enjoys baseball and motor-
ing.
