JOHN S. SMITH.
John S. Smith, manager of the Saskatoon branch of The Hudson's
Bay Company, is one of the leading business men of the city and province.
He was born in Birmingham, England, on June 2, 1878, a son of John
Henry and Helen (Garrett) Smith, natives of England. The father
engaged in the newspaper business in his native country for many years
and in 1883 came to Canada and has edited several papers in this coun-
try. He is now living retired from active life in Vancouver. Mrs. Smith
died in February, 1919.
In the pursuit of his education John S. Smith attended the public
schools of Winnipeg and Morden, Manitoba, and at the age of fifteen
years made his initial step into the business world, securing a position
as. delivery boy for The Hudson's Bay Company, on the 4th of September,
1892. He started to work for The Hudson's Bay Company at Morden
.and was moved from that town to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, in 1899. Two
years later he was made manager of that store and he was active in that
capacity until 1914, when he was transferred to the Lethbridge branch
as manager. In the spring of 1919 he was given the position of mer-
chandise manager in the big store at Calgary, and on the 15th of
April, 1922, he was made general manager of the Saskatoon store. The
large departmental store of The Hudson's Bay Company in this city is
located at the northwest corner of Second avenue 'and Twenty~third street
and is one of the finest buildings in the city. Having worked his way
up from the very minor position of delivery boy, Mr. Smith has become
thoroughly familiar with every phase of the business and is well fitted
to discharge the manifold duties devolving upon him. He possesses those
qualities that stand for leadership in any line of endeavor and is held in
high confidence and esteem by all with whom he comes into contact.
On the 29th of October, 1902, Mr. Smith was married to Miss Olive
Chrysler and they have two children: Irving, whose birth occurred at
Yorkton, on the 11th of January, 1910; and Margaret, who was born at
Lethbridge, on the 2d of April, 1916. Although the greater part of Mr.
Smith's time and attention is devoted to his duties at the store, he is ever
ready to lend his support to any movement for the benefit of his home city.
Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, holding membership in
Yorkton Lodge, No.12, and Valley of Winnipeg Lodge, and he has at-
tamed the fourteenth degree in the Scottish Rite. Mr. Smith is an active
member of the local Rotary Club and also holds membership in the Ca-
nadian Club and the Riverside Country Club. His religious faith is that
of the Episcopal church, and he is a consistent attendant of St. John's
Episcopal church in this city. He was people's warden of St. Augustine's
church at Lethbridge. For many years Mr. Smith was actively interested
in the musical activities of the various communities in which he made
his home and he organized a band and orchestra at Yorkton, which he
directed for some fifteen years. He has now, however, discontinued his
activity along that line. He is a man of genial and pleasing person
and has the genius for making and keeping friends. The success he has
achieved is the result of his own intelligently directed efforts and close
application to the thing at hand and Saskatoon is proud to number him
among her representative business men and citizens.
