JAMES McLEOD, M.D.
 


	Few men are more prominent or more widely known in the enterpris-
ing city of Regina than Dr. James McLeod, eye specialist, who has been
engaged in the practice of his profession in Regina since 1905. He was
born in Prince Edward Island, a son of Alex and Annie (MacDonald)
McLeod, both natives of Scotland, in which country they were married.
They moved to Prince Edward Island about 1858. Mr. McLeod farmed
successfully the greater part of his life. He was a highly respected and
esteemed citizen of the community in which he resided. In his political
views he was a Liberal and he maintained an active interest in party af-
fairs. The religious faith of Mr. and Mrs. McLeod was that of the Presby-
terian church and they were interested workers in its behalf. To them
six children were born, Dr. McLeod, whose name introduces this review,
being the youngest member of the family.
	James McLeod received his education in the Springton grammar school
and subsequently enrolled in Prince of Wales College. After graduating
from this institution he taught school on Prince Edward Island for three
years and his most famous pupil was Miss L. M. Montgomery of "Anne
of Green Gables" fame. He later removed to British Columbia and after
teaching there a few years enrolled in McGill University, which con-
ferred the M. D. degree upon him in 1898. Immediately after receiving
his degree he located in Wallace, Nova Scotia, and practiced his profes-
sion there for five years. He went to London, England, in 1904 and took
a course in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat, spending over a year
there, after which he took a short course in Vienna. He returned to Canada
and began the practice of his specialty in Regina in 1905, where he has
since given his time and attention to diseases of the eye, ear, nose and
throat, and he has the distinction of being the first specialist in the pro-
vince. Dr. McLeod went to London, England, the second time in 1913
and remained there for six months. He took a short course in New York
in 1907 and recently returned from New York, where he completed an-
other course in postgraduate work. He is sincerely devoted to his profes-
sion and keeps in constant touch with the advancement ever being made
by prominent members of the profession throughout the country.  Dr.
McLeod is a self-made man in the truest sense of the word and well de-
serves his success.
	In 1908 Dr. McLeod was married to Miss Sadie MacLeod, who was
born in Prince Edward Island and taught school there for a time. To
them four children have been born: Marjorie, a student in the Collegiate
Institute; James Gordon and Mary Isobel, students in the local schools;
and the youngest, Catherine Jean Elaine.  Dr. and Mrs. McLeod are
members of the Knox Presbyterian church and Mrs. McLeod is president
of the Ladies' Aid Society and active in other local and provincial organi-
zations, being on the executive of the Provincial 1.0. D. E. and of the Re-
gina Woman's Canadian Club. She is a woman of culture and refinement
and possesses a charming personality.
	Dr. McLeod is very public-spirited and although he has had little time
to devote to political affairs he is mindful of the duties and responsibilities,
as well as the privileges of good citizenship and to that end is never too
busy to lend his aid in the furtherance of any movement for the benefit of
the community.  He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a
member of the British Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Asso-
ciation, the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the Regina Medical
Society.  He has served as president of the local branch of the British
Medical Association and has been president of the Regina Medical Asso-
ciation. Socially he is identified with the Canadian Club. Dr. McLeod's
hobby is gardening and he 'spends the greater part of his spare time in
that way. He is one of the representative members of the medical pro-
fession in the city and province and Regina is indeed fortunate in having
him for a citizen.
