ERNEST A. MCCALLUM.
Success in any line of endeavor is not so much a matter of discrimi- nating brain and extraordinary efficiency as it is the result of continu- ous labor, a mastery of detail and a love of hard work. These qualities, possessed in an eminent degree, make success almost inevitable, and it is to their possession that Ernest A. McCallum, prominent in real estate and insurance circles, owes much of his progress. He was born in Cum- berland, Ontario, on the 6th of September, 1869, a son of Donald and Jane (McCaffrey) McCallum, both natives of Ontario. For some time the father engaged in farming there and later established a mercantile business in Cumberland. He lived retired the latter part of his life, en- joying the comfortable competence he had accumulated. To him and his wife six children were born, five of whom are living: Ernest A., whose name introduces this review; A. D., who is farming at Maple Creek, Saskatchewan; H. M., who is manager for the London Life Insurance Company in Regina; Maude M. Gordon, wife of. C. F. Gordon, now of Toronto; and E. D., who is associated with his brother, Ernest, in the real estate and insurance business. Throughout his life the father gave his political allegiance to the Liberal party and. his religious faith was that of the Presbyterian church. Ernest A. McCallum attended the village schools and the Vankleek Hill, Ontario, high school. Upon the completion of his preliminary edu- cation he engaged in teaching school for three years in Ontario. In 1897 he came to Regina and studied law for four years, in the office of Judge Johnson. He did not find the legal profession entirely to his liking, however, and subsequently went into the real estate and insurance busi- ness. He began to buy and sell real estate and speculate in a small way and as the result of his keen discrimination and judgment he achieved success from the start. In 1903 he had his business incorporated under the name of McCallum & Hill, taking into partnership W. H. A. Hill and E.D. McCallum. The company erected a large ten-story office building in 1914, and its business is the largest of its kind in Saskatchewan. The firm organized the Saskatchewan Guaranty Fidelity Company and Mr. McCallum has been president of the enterprise since its organization. It owns much city property and has built many houses in Regina, which have been sold on the small payment plan. The company is general agents for Saskatchewan for the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company and for the Bee Hail Company. It likewise represents ten of the leading fire insurance companies. Mr. McCallum is a member of the executive committee of the Regina Agricultural & Industrial Association, Limited. In 1905 Mr. McCallum was married to Miss Laura Potter, a native of Ontario, where she received her education. To Mr. and Mrs. McCallum two sons were born: John E., who is attending the Toronto University; and Clare, a student in the Regina Collegiate Institute. Mrs. McCallum's death occurred in 1908 and brought deep sorrow to her family and many friends. She was prominent in club and social circles and was a consist- ent member of the Anglican church. Fraternally Mr. McCallum is iden- tified with the Knights of Pythias, in which he has served as chancellor commander. He is a member of the Canadian Club and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. His political allegiance is given to the Liberal party. Bibliography follows:
