JOHN F. MACKENZIE.
John F. MacKenzie, affectionately known by his many friends here
as "Jack," is well known in business circles of Tisdale as a member of
Buxton & Company, a real estate and insurance enterprise. He was
born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on the 2d of October,
1868, a son of J. C. and Jane (MacKenzie) MacKenzie, the former a na-
tive of Scotland and the latter of Prince Edward Island: J. C. Mac-
Kenzie came to Prince Edward Island when six years of age with his
parents and upon reaching manhood engaged in the boot and shoe busi-
ness there until 1881, when he came west and located in Prince Albert
where he resumed his trade. Several years later he homesteaded nine
miles southwest of Prince Albert and was active in agricultural pursuits
for about twenty years. He then retired from active life and was resid-
ing in Prince Albert at the time of his death in April, 1914, at the age
of sixty-eight years. Mrs. MacKenzie died in December of the year 1910.
The public schools of Prince Edward Island afforded John F. Mac-
Kenzie his education and he came west with the family in 1883, two
years after his father had located in Prince Albert. The trip was made
with horses from Qu'Appelle. Mr. MacKenzie was but fifteen years of
age when he arrived in Prince Albert and in 1888 he went to work in
the butcher shop of Russell & Davis and eventually bought out the busi-
ness, which he operated successfully for some twenty-five years. He
then entered the employ of the government as homestead inspector and
continued in that line of work four years. In 1919 he came to Tisdale
and has since been in the real estate and insurance business here. Bux-
ton & Company, with which firm he is associated, is one of the repre-
sentative real estate and insurance companies in this vicinity and Mr.
MacKenzie has been a dominant factor in the continued growth of the
enterprise.
On the 4th of November, 1905, Mr. MacKenzie was married to Miss
Catherine Stewart Forsyth. They have an adopted daughter, Victoria
Virginia Rose, who was born on the 19th of January, 1915. Mr. MacKenzie
gives his political allegiance to the Conservative party and main-
tains an active interest in civic affairs. He is at the present time presi-
dent of the local Board of Trade. Fraternally he is identified with the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Socially he is connected with the
Curling Club, and his religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church.
He has travelled extensively throughout the northern part of the province
in the conduct of his business and no man is better informed on land
values. Mr. MacKenzie is also a successful auctioneer.
