ALEXANDER J. G. MACECHEN, LL. D.
A prominent member of the legal profession in Regina, and police magistrate is Alexander J. G. MacEchen, who was born in Nova Scotia, in 1866, a son of John and Margaret (MacLean) MacEchen, both natives of Scotland, who came to Nova Scotia with their parents when children and met and were married in Nova Scotia, where they resided until their death. For many years John MacEchen taught in the grammar and high schools. He was a man of high intellectual attainments and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He and his wife were consistent com- municants of the Roman Catholic church. To them twelve children were born, Alexander J. G., being the seventh in order of birth. The public schools of his birthplace afforded Alexander J. G. Mac- Echen his early education and subsequently he enrolled in St. Francis Xavier's College, where he took an art course. He was graduated from that institution in 1886 and subsequently took up the study of law in a college in Halifax. He received his degree in 1899 and practiced in Sydney and throughout eastern Nova Scotia; until 1913. He enjoyed substantial success and in 1913 went to Winnipeg and thence came to Regina, where he entered the attorney-general's office as deputy. He had held that important position for four years, when his health failed and he was forced to resign. He was appointed to the office of police mag- istrate and has since discharged the duties of this office. His work as police magistrate takes him throughout the province and by being in the outdoors the greater part of his time he has succeeded in building up his health. For over six years Mr. MacEchen was connected with St. Francis Xavier's College, where he lectured on political economy and on the first year law courses. In 1908 Mr. MacEchen was married to Miss Arabella MacPherson of Nova Scotia, who received her education in the Pictou Academy and for some years taught school. To Mr. and Mrs. MacEchen one daughter has been born: Margaret, who is twelve years of age. Mrs. MacEchen is a member of the Presbyterian church, and she maintains an active in- terest in the club and social circles of this city. The religious faith of Mr. MacEchen is that of the Roman Catholic church. He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus and while in Nova Scotia he held the office of grand knight.
