JOHN ROSS MACDONALD.
John Ross MacDonald, the present mayor of Wilkie, is a member of
the prominent law firm of MacDonald & Morris. He was born in Canada,
on a farm in the township of Sydenham, near Owen Sound, Ontario, on the
20th of August, 1887, a son of Gilbert and Elizabeth (Young) MacDon-
ald, natives of that province. The father followed agricultural pursuits
for many years in Ontario and later moved to a farm near Guernsey, Sas-
katchewan. He retired from active life in 1916 and resided in Saskatoon
until 1920, since which time he has made his home at New Westminster,
British Columbia.
Upon attaining school age John Ross MacDonald entered the public
school in Sydenham township, and later enrolled in the Owen Sound Col-
legiate Institute. In 1905 he came to Saskatchewan and acquired a home-
stead near Guernsey, which he operated until 1909, when he entered the
University of Saskatchewan and was graduated with the B. A. degree in
1913. The LL. B. degree was conferred upon him by that institution in
1915, and the following year he was called to the bar. While a student at
law Mr. MacDonald studied in the office of McCraney & McKenzie at
Saskatoon. In 1916 he commenced the active practice of law in Wilkie
and practiced independently until the 1st of November, 1922, when he
formed a 'partnership with C. S. E. Morris, whose sketch appears else
where in this work. They are among the foremost barristers at the dis-
trict and provincial bars and have an extensive and important clientele.
In December of the year 1916 Mr. MacDonald was married to Miss
Emily S. Wilson, and they have become parents of one child: Rhodo Ro-
wena, whose birth occurred on the 22d of October, 1920. Mr. MacDon-
aId is a member of the Dominion, Saskatchewan and Wilkie Bar Asso-
ciations. He is an active member of the Liberal party and has been
prominent in the civic affairs of Wilkie. He became a member of the
town council in 1917 and has represented Battleford district in the Uni-
versity Senate since 1920. Since 1917 he has been president of the Lib-
eral Association and he has been mayor of Wilkie since December, 1921.
During his administration he has inaugurated and brought to completion
many movements beneficial to Wilkie. Although he is a member of the
Baptist church, he is attending the Presbyterian church and he is a gen-
erous contributor to its support. Fraternally he is identified with the
Masons and is an active member of the Wilkie Golf Club.
