RODERICK LEITCH.
Roderick Leitch, general merchant of Sutherland, is one of its most
progressive and public-spirited citizens. He was born in the county of
Huron, Ontario, on the 14th of March, 1880, a son of Dougal and Annie
(MacKenzie) Leitch, natives of Scotland, who came to Canada when
children. The father was a tailor by trade but followed agricultural pur-
suits for the greater part of his life in Huron county and in Manitoba.
His death occurred in June, 1902, after a life of successful achievement.
Mrs. Leitch died in August, 1905.
Roderick Leitch was reared and educated in Manitoba and remained
with his parents on the home farm until he was eighteen years of age,
when he engaged in railroad work as a brakeman, in which capacity he
served for three years. He then entered the general mercantile business
in Isley, Alberta, conducted his store there for a time, and thence removed
to Edmonton, where he was engaged in mercantile pursuits for two
years. In 1913 Mr. Leitch came to Sutherland and bought the general
mercantile business which he now conducts. He carries a complete and
high grade line of goods and his patrons are always assured the most
courteous and efficient service. He owns the building in which his store is
housed and also owns his home here in Sutherland.
On the 4th of December, 1900, Mr. Leitch was married to Miss Effle
B. McNab and they have four children: Ingle Vern, Warren C., Margaret
and Gwen. Fraternally Mr. Leitch is identified with the Masons and
socially he holds membership in the Canadian Club. His religious faith
is that of the Presbyterian church and he has been a member of the
managing board of the local church for the past six years.
