JOHN WATT HOPE.
John Watt Hope, mayor of Yellow Grass, Milestone district, Saskatche- wan, has been actively identified with the implement business here for some time. He was born in Scotland, on the 4th of October, 1876, a son of George and Margaret (Walters) Hope, the former a native of Scot. land, the latter of New York state, United States of America. They lived in Scotland for the greater part of their lives and were prominent citi- zens of the community in which they made their home. In the pursuit of his education John Watt Hope attended the public schools of his native land and in 1905 he left Scotland and emigrated to Canada. He first located at Souris, Manitoba, and after four months re- moved to Malachi and engaged in blacksmithing there until 1910. In the latter part of that year he made a visit to his old home in Scotland and in 1911 returned to Malachi, where he remained but a short time. He then came to Yellow Grass and entered the employ of the well known firm of Ham, Duncan & Scott, hardware merchants, whose business he purchased the following year, and has since engaged in that line of work. The dominant characteristics of Mr. Hope are pluck, energy and per- severance and the success he has achieved has been on a parity with his well-directed endeavors. Mr. Hope was married to Miss Ada Dobbyn, a native of Manitoba, and they have seven children: Francis, Mary, Edith, Dorothy, Donald and Donalda, twins, and Gene. Mr. Hope has been mayor of Yellow Grass since 1921 and he has inaugurated and brought to completion many move- ments for the benefit of the community. He was a member of the city council in 1913. Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and his religious faith is that of the United church. Mr. Hope is a man of genial and pleasing personality and he is a general favorite among those with whom he has come into contact. Bibliography follows:
