ROBERT JOHN HAWTHORNE.
Robert John Hawthorne, senior member of the firm of Hawthorne & Rappell, barristers, solicitors and notaries public of Assiniboia, has since 1922 been agent for the attorney-general. His birth occurred in the province of Ontario, on the 13th of May, 1885, his parents being Samuel and Sarah (Cook) Hawthorne, likewise natives of Ontario. For many years the father engaged in farming in that province and became suc- cessful as an agriculturist. He is now retired from active life and he and his wife make their home in Elbow, Saskatchewan, where they are highly respected and esteemed citizens. Robert J. Hawthorne received a limited education in Ontario and taught school in that province for some time prior to coming to Saskatch- ewan in 1906. Subsequently he saved enough 'money to enable him to take up the study 'of law and was admitted to the bar in this province in November, 1912. He practiced his profession first at Elbow, from 1912 to 1916, and then went to Moose Jaw, where in the latter year he served as captain in the Two Hundred and Tenth Canadian Battalion. In the fall of 1916 he came to Assiniboia, where he has since resided. He has built up an extensive and important clientele and handles much litigation before the courts, while since May, 1922, he has acted as agent for the attorney-general. Mr. Hawthorne is a self-made man in the truest sense of the word and the success he has gained in his profession is the result of hard work and innate ability. He ranks high among the foremost barristers at the Saskatchewan bar and enjoys the confidence and esteem of his fellowmen, as well as of his professional brethren. Mr. Hawthorne was married to Miss Margaret Cascaden and they have three children: Robert, May and William. Mr. Hawthorne served on the city council for four years, from 1919 until 1923, and during that period was a dominant factor in the promotion of many movements for the public welfare. He is a member of the Church of England. For recreation he turns to outdoor sports, of which he is very fond. Bibliography follows:
