ROBERT LEITH HANBIDGE.
Robert Leith Hanbidge, mayor of Kerrobert, also holds a leading p0-
sition as a barrister and citizen. High standards have marked his career
since its beginning and his public spirit has been rewarded by his elec-
tion to public office. He is a member of the well established firm of Han-
bidge & Hanbidge and has been chief executive of the town of Kerro-
bert since 1921.
Robert Leith Hanbidge was born in Southampton, Bruce county, On-
tario, on the 16th of March, 1891, a son of Robert and Fanny (Murton)
Hanbidge, natives of Ontario, the former of whom engaged in farming
in Bruce county for many years. He was taken to that county by his
parents when he was a year old. During the many years of his residence
there he was an influential factor in the development and improvement
of the country and was held in high regard. He is now retired from
active life and is residing in Port Elgin.
The public schools of Southampton and Port Elgin afforded Robert
Leith Hanbidge his early education and subsequently he enrolled in
the Owen Sound Collegiate Institute. He was graduated in the year
1909 and soon afterward located in Regina, where he was articled to the
present Attorney-General, J. A. Cross, for the study of law. He re-
mained with him for three years and then went to Mr. Fisher and was
subsequently with Martin & McEwen. The last few months of his study
was spent with his brother, J. M. Hanbidge, at Kerrobert, and after he
was called to the bar in December, 1914, he formed a partnership with
his brother, under the firm style of Hanbidge & Hanbidge. They are
among the foremost barristers at the district and provincial bars and
have an extensive and important clientele, handling much litigation be-
fore the courts. Robert Leith Hanbidge was town solicitor of Kerrobert
for four years.
On the 8th of September, 1915, Mr. Hanbidge was married to Miss
Jane Mitchell, a daughter of Donald and Margaret (McKellar) Mitchell,
both of whom are living. Mr. Mitchell is agent for the Beaver Lumber
Company at Francis, Saskatchewan, and is also postmaster there. Mr.
and Mrs. Hanbidge have become the parents of five children: Muriel,
Gladys, Beryl, Keith and Alice. In his political views Mr. Hanbidge has
always favored the Conservative party and in December, 1920, he was
elected mayor of Kerrobert. He has since been reelected to that office,
always by acclamation. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, of
which he is past master and he is affiliated with the Independent Order of
Odd Fellows. Socially he is connected with the Kerrobert Golf Club and
the Curling Club. He is greatly interested in all outdoor sports and for-
merly played football with the Regina team, being a member of the team
when it won the championship of Western Canada in 1910. The religious
faith of Mr. Hanbidge is that of the Methodist church. Along strictly
professional lines he belongs to the Dominion, Saskatchewan and Kerro-
bert Bar Associations. He has one of the finest law offices in this town
and the largest and most complete law library in the district. He also
has farming interests here.
