FRANCIS JOSEPH ELLIS, M.D.
Dr. Francis Joseph Ellis is a prominent physician and surgeon of
Regina, where he has been engaged in practice for seventeen years
Born in Leeds county, Ontario, on the 19th of December, 1875, he is the
fifth of the six children in the family of George and Ellen (Pownall)
Ellis. An Irishman by birth, the father came to Canada in early life,
where he taught school for many years, later abandoning his
educational work to engage in mercantile pursuits. He was an Orangeman
and a Conservative in politics. Both he and his wife, the latter of whom
was a native of Canada, were members of the Anglican church and tool
an active part in its work. Both are deceased, the mother passing away
very recently, after having survived her husband for twenty-five
years.
Francis Joseph Ellis obtained an early educational training in the
public schools of his native county, and then entered the Athens high
school, from which he graduated in 1897. The following two years he
taught school to earn the money to prepare himself for the medical pro.
fession. Entering the medical department of Queen's University he suc-
cessfully completed the requirements for the Doctor of Medicine degree,
which was conferred upon him in 1903. The young physician spent the
first three years out of medical school in the hospitals of New York city,
gaining that practical experience that is so necessary to the medical man.
In 1906 he came to Regina and has since resided in this city. With the
exception of the time he spent in the military service during the Great
war he has devoted himself exclusively to the practice of his profession
and now enjoys a large and lucrative general practice. He belongs to a
number of professional organizations, through which he keeps in touch
with the latest development in the medical world and occasionally spends
a little time in some large clinic, where he comes into direct contact with
many of the leading surgeons of the world.
In 1913 Dr. Ellis was married to Miss Ethel Whitely, who was born
in Goderich, Ontario. They have become the parents of two children;
Francis Joseph Jr., who is now attending school; and Maxine Ellen. Dr.
Ellis is a member of the Anglican Church. In the Great war he was
overseas for a year as captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. His
practice makes such incessant demands upon his time and energies that
Dr. Ellis finds he has little opportunity to take an active part in civic and
political life. His close application, indefatigable energy and medical
skill have won him the respect of his professional colleagues and the con-
fidence of the laity, and he enjoys the well-merited reputation of being
a conscientious and able physician and surgeon.
