ARTHUR S. GORRELL, M.D.
Dr. Arthur S. Gorrell, an active and successful representative of the
medical profession in Regina for the past sixteen years, has made a
specialty of the treatment of diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat.
His birth occurred at Farran's Point, Stormont county, Ontario, on the
18th of November, 1869, his parents being Taylor and Catherine (Fulton)
Gorrell, the former a native of Brockville, Ontario, and the latter of New
Zealand. Taylor Gorrell, whose parents came from the north of Ire-
land, gave his political support to the Liberal party and was a civil ser-
vant. He was a worthy exemplar of the teachings and purposes of the
Masonic fraternity and passed away in the faith of the Church of Eng-
land. Both he and his wife, who was the first white child to cross the
Isthmus of Panama during the gold excitement of 1849, died in Ontario.
They were the parents of seven children, six of whom survive.
Arthur S. Gorrell, the eldest of the family, acquired his more specific-
ally literary education in the Brockville high school and in 1886 matric-
ulated in McGill University, from which institution he was graduated in
1890, on the completion of a course in medicine. His initial experience
as a medical practitioner was obtained at Newboro, in North Leeds county,
Ontario, where he remained for a year, on the expiration of which period
he removed to Ashton, Ontario, there following his profession for four-
teen years. He then went abroad for special work on the eye, ear, nose
and throat, studying in London, Paris and Vienna. It was on the 8th of
December, 1907, that he settled in Regina, where he has remained to the
present time and has built up an extensive and gratifying practice as an
ophthalmologist, otologist, rhinologist and laryngologist. In 1919 he spent
two months in postgraduate work in Montreal and has ever kept abreast
with the most advanced methods and scientific investigations of the pro-
fession.
On the 26th of October, 1898, Dr. Gorrell was united in marriage to
Miss Ethel Jean Cherry, who was born, reared and educated in Carle-
ton county, Ontario. They have become parents of four children, as fol-
lows: Taylor, who served with the artillery in England during the period
of the Great war and is now connected with the Crane Company; Catherine
Cherry, who has been a student in the Collegiate Institute and in Havergal
College of Toronto and is now attending the Methodist College of Regina;
and Charles C. and Douglas Stirling, both of whom are students in the
Collegiate Institute.
Dr. Gorrell is a Liberal and in former years took an active part in
politics, making many campaign speeches for the candidates of the party
and becoming widely recognized as an orator of power and ability whose
utterances carried conviction to the minds of his hearers. His religious
faith is indicated by his membership in the Church of England, while
fraternally he is a Scottish Rite Mason, belonging to the lodge end chap-
ter. He is past grand master of Saskatchewan and past grand first
principal of the Grand Chapter of Canada. The Doctor is also an Orange-
man and past county master of Carleton county, Ontario. During the
period of the Great war he organized and had charge of the medical de-
partment of the province of Saskatchewan, and is now lieutenant colonel
and was the first Assistant Director of medical services in Military Dis-
trict No.12. He belongs to the organization known as Great War Veterans
and is also a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Assiniboia Club. Golf
and fishing afford him needed recreation and he is likewise fond of base-
ball and in fact, of all manly athletic sports, but does not allow outside in-
terests of any kind to interfere with the faithful performance of his
professional duties, which are now extensive and of an importantcharacter.
