JOHN E. FAITHFULL.
John E. Faithfull, chief of the fire department of Saskatoon, was born
in Toronto, Ontario, on the 11th of May, 1889, a son of William and Susan
(Combs) Faithfull, natives of England. In early life the father learned
the bricklayer's trade and followed that trade for many years. About
1859 he came to Canada and located at Toronto, where he resided until
1906, when he came to Saskatoon, where his death occurred the 16th of
July, 1918. Mrs. Faithfull survives her husband and is making her home
with her son, John E., whose name introduces this review.
The public schools of Toronto afforded John E. Faithfull his early
education and after putting his textbooks aside he engaged in the whole-
sale jewelry business, working for a concern in Toronto for four years.
During that time he became familiar with watchmaking. In 1907 he
came to Saskatoon and farmed near here for one and one-half years.
He did not find that line of work entirely to his liking, so moved into
Saskatoon and joined the city fire department, being made captain in
1912. He served efficiently in that capacity until 1919, when he was
made chief of the fire department, and he has since held this office, his
services in this connection proving to be invaluable to the city.
On the 9th of August, 1911, Mr. Faithfull was married to Miss Mabel
Sharpe, a daughter of Thomas Sharpe. Her parents were natives of
England, and for many years the father served in the English army as
a sergeant. In 1906, however, he came to Canada and homesteaded some
land in Saskatoon, which he operated for the remainder of his life, pass-
ing away in 1909. He~was one of the representative agriculturists in this
district and achieved gratifying success. His widow survives him and is
now living in Edson, Alberta. Mr. and Mrs. Faithfull have two children:
Una, born on the 7th of August, 1912; and Ruby, born on the 7th of July,
1916.
Mr. Faithfull is a member of the International Fire Engineers As-
sociation and the Dominion Association of Fire Chiefs and he has been
provincial vice president of the latter organization since 1922. His re-
ligious faith is that of the Methodist church and he is a member of the
finance committee of the local church to which he belongs. Mr. Faithfull
is one of the representative citizens of Saskatoon. His prosperity is well
deserved, as in him are embraced the characteristics of an unbending
integrity, unabating energy and industry that never flags. He is essen-
tially public-spirited and gives his cooperation to every movement which
tends to promote the moral, intellectual and material welfare of the com-
munity, and he has a host of friends.
