ARTHUR W. DUFFUS.
Arthur W. Duffus, major in command of the Depot Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Regina, first came to this city in 1896 as a constable in the Mounted Police force. In the more than a quarter of a century that has passed since then he has been stationed in various places in western Canada and elsewhere, in connection with his duties, but from time to time has returned to the Saskatchewan capi- tal, which is now his home. He is a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was born in 1872, the fourth child in the family of the late William and Mary (Davis) Duffus, both of whom claimed that province as their birth- place. On his mother's side of the house Major Duffus is English, his grandparents having come from the home country, while his paternal ancestors were Scotch. William Duffus was interested in the West In- dian trade as a dry goods merchant and a shipowner, operating a fleet of sailing vessels. Later in life he engaged in the lumber business. In politics he was a loyal supporter of the Liberal party and religiously was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church, as was his wife. He is survived by his widow, who resides in Halifax, and four of his seven children are living. Arthur W. Duffus obtained his education in Toronto, where he at- tended Upper Canada College. In 1896 he joined the North West Mount- ed Police as a constable, coming to Regina, where he was stationed for eighteen months, following which he was transferred to Calgary and other posts in Alberta. His life since then has been the migratory one necessitated by his kind of work. In 1$98 he returned to Regina for a while and here was promoted to the rank of corporal. After two years in Dawson, in the Yukon, he came down to Regina again and was at- tached to various posts in this region during the next few years. He was detailed to duty on the train which carried the present King of England across Canada on his tour to the Dominion and in 1902 was commissioned inspector, being transferred to Lethdridge, where he was in charge of the boundary line for a year. The next ten years were spent on duty at Calgary and the four succeeding ones at Saskatoon. In 1916 he went back in Regina as superintendent in command of the Regina district. The following year he sailed for Siberia as second in command of B Squadron, Canadian Expeditionary Force, returning in 1918. A new squadron was organized after he came back and he went to Brandon, Manitoba, in command of this division, thence to Toronto, where he was in charge of the West Ontario district for two years and a half. On the first day of May, 1923, he came back to Regina to take command of the Depot Division, with the rank of major. In 1903 Mr. Duffus was married to Miss Heloise Smith, and they have two children, a son and a daughter: Mortimer, aged eighteen; and Emily, a girl of twelve. Mrs. Duffus was born in Halifax, but received her education in England and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both Mr. and Mrs. Duffus are communicants of the Anglican church. Mr. Duffus is fond of outdoor life and has always been interested in all sorts of sports. He plays golf, rides and hunts, belonging to the Toronto Hunt Club and the Toronto Garrison Bambington Club. In the different times he has been stationed in Regina, Major Duffus has made many friends, both in military and civilian circles, who have welcomed him back as a resident of the capital city and extended to him and Mrs. Duffus a cordial hospitality.
