SYLVESTER R. CURTIN.
Sylvester R. Curtin, a well known barrister of Regina, who has been
practicing his profession for the past ten years, comes from a family
distinguished for its contributions to the professional world. Although
they were born and bred on a farm, five of the nine children in the family
of Joseph and Ellen (Heapley) Curtin are now engaged in professional
work. Four of them, two sons and two daughters, are lawyers and a
fifth child, a daughter, is a practicing physician of Toronto. John Thomas
Curtin, the oldest member of the family, is an attorney of Los Angeles,
California, an officer of the Spanish American war and a veteran of the
Great War. Katherine and Gertrude are the feminine representatives
of the legal profession and Agnes A. is the doctor. Sylvester R. is the
fourth child in the order of birth and was born at Burritts Rapids, On-
tario, March 29, 1884. His father, a native of Ireland, came to Canada
as a young man and settled in Ontario, where he was engaged in agricul-
tural pursuits until his death in 1912. In that province he was married
to Ellen Heapley, who was born and reared in Ontario. Joseph Curtin
was a member of the Roman Catholic faith and a Liberal in his political
views. Since his death his widow has made her home in Edmonton.
After completing the elementary work of the schools near his boy-
hood home Sylvester R. Curtin entered the Kemptville high school and
prepared for Queen's University of Kingston, from which he graduated
in the class of 1911. His preparation for the legal profession was made
under the direction of Judge Embury of Regina, that able jurist who has
been the preceptor of many an aspiring young man, with whom he read
Blackstone and the other commentators for three years. He was called
to the bar of Saskatchewan in 1914 and immediately following this event
began to practice of his profession in association with Mr. Tingley,
with whom he remained for two years. Since then he has been practic-
ing alone and has built up a gratifying clientele. He is a member of the
Regina Bar Association and devotes his entire time to his profession,
his steady advancement in his chosen field of endeavor being due to his
individual merit and persistent application.
IN 1921 Mr. Curtin was married to Miss Kathaleen McFadden, who
was born and educated in Nova Scotia and had been connected with the
Department of Education of Saskatchewan in Regina for ten years prior
to her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Curtin are both members of the Roman
Catholic Church and Mr. Curtin belongs to the Knights of Columbus, in
which he formerly held the office of grand knight of the Regina district
He is a Liberal in politics and belongs to the Canadian and Regina Golf
Clubs, these associations indicating the trend of his recreational inter-
ests. Mr. Curtin is yet a young man but has made an excellent record
in his profession, while his salient characteristics are those that promise
further advance.
