Avery Casey, a well known barrister of Regina, where he has prac- ticed his profession continuously and successfully during the past sixteen years, is now the senior member of the firm of Casey, Dawson & Com- pany. He was born near Belleville, Ontario, on the 21st of September, 1870, the only child of Samuel Selden and Idda Belinda (Kent) Casey, who were also natives of the province of Ontario and were there married. The father, who was educated in Albert College and was a man of broad general knowledge, was variously engaged during his business career, displaying aptitude along several different lines of activity. A Liberal in his political views, he did everything in his power to promote the in- terests of the party. His demise occurred in London, Ontario. His widow now makes her home in Regina. The Casey family, of United Empire Loyalist ancestry, was founded in the United States by progenitors who emigrated from England in 1658, but was later established in Ontario. In the maternal line Mr. Casey of this review traces his ancestry back to England and Scotland. His maternal uncles were representatives of the old and prominent Kent family of Kingston, Ontario. In the acquirement of an education Avery Casey pursued a high school course at London, Ontario, and subsequently prepared for a professional career as a student in Trinity University, from which institution he was graduated with the degree of B. C. L. in 1895. His initial experience as a law practitioner was obtained in London, Ontario, where he con- tinued for five or six years. It was in 1907 that he came to Regina, which has remained the scene of his professional activity throughout the intervening period to the present times. For a decade he was associated with James Balfour, K. C., and W. M. Martin, now Mr. Justice Mar- tin, under the firm name of Balfour, Martin & Casey and afterward be- came a member of the firm of Casey, Dawson & Hutchinson, while at present he is at the head of Casey, Dawson & Company, which is accorded an extensive general practice. At one time Mr. Casey devoted considerable attention to criminal law cases. An excellent presence, an earnest, digni- fled manner, marked strength of character, a thorough grasp of the law and the ability accurately to apply its principles, are factors in his effec- tiveness as an advocate. He was made King's Counsel in 1916 and has been honored with the presidency of the Regina Bar Association. In 1905 Mr. Casey was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Steuart, who was born, reared and educated in London, Ontario, and has completed a course in music. They have become parents of twin daughters Mauriel Irene and Elinor Beatrice, who are students in the Collegiate Institute. The family are members of the Knox Presbyterian church and have won many friends during the period of their residence in Regina. Mr. Casey gives his political support to the Liberal party, but is somewhat inde- pendent in his views and does not blindly follow party leadership. Bibliography follows:
