JOHN CALVIN BLACK, M.D.
Dr. John Calvin Black is numbered among the representative mem- bers of the medical profession in Regina. A native of Ontario, his birth occurred at Oxford, Grenville county, on the 19th of June, 1881. His father, William John Black, was born in County Armagh, Ireland, and came to Canada with his parents in 1843. They located in the province of Ontario and Mr. Black resided there until his death in 1887, when fifty-eight years of age. He engaged in agricultural pursuits for the greater part of his life and acquired a competence sufficient for the com- forts and some of the luxuries of life. His widow is making her home in Kemptville, Ontario, and.is in good health, at the age of eighty-one years. Throughout his life Mr. Black gave his political allegiance to the Con- servative party and he had firm belief in the principles of that party as factors in good government. He maintained an active interest in civic affairs and was readily conceded to be one of the representative citizens of the community in which he resided His religious faith was that of the Presbyterian church, in which his widow is a zealous worker. In the acquirement of his preliminary education John Calvin Black attended the public schools of his birthplace and was graduated from the Remptville high school. In due time he enrolled in McGill University and was graduated from that institution in 1904, with the M. D. degree. In the same year he came to Regina and opened offices for the practice of his chosen profession, being successful from the start. In June, 1909, Dr. Black was married to Miss Joanna McGregor, a native of Appin, Ontario, near London. She was educated there and received her training as a nurse in the Regina General Hospital. For two years prior to her marriage she engaged in nursing, and she is very capable and efficient and has been a great help to her husband in the prac- tice of his profession. To Dr. and Mrs. Black three children have been born: John Robert, twelve years of age; Dorotha Louvain, born in 1914; and James Calvin, born on the 1st of February, 1921. Dr. and Mrs. Black are members of the Knox Presbyterian church and she is very active in the various church societies. Since attaining his majority Dr. Black has given his political allegiance to the Conservative party and the principles for which it stands. He is essentially public-spirited and is ever ready to cooperate in civic constructive measures. Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Foresters. Dr. Black is a member of the staff of two hospitals and he is sincerely devoted to his profession and well merits his success. Bibliography follows:
