HENRY BLACK.
Few men are more prominent or more widely known in the enterprising
city of Regina than Henry Black, capitalist. For years he has been closely
identified with the history of the city as a representative of some of its
most important business interests and he well merits the confidence and
esteem in which he is held by all who know him. His birth occurred in
Granville, Ontario, on the 14th of February, 1875, his parents being Wil-
liam John and Elizabeth (Johnson) Black.
In the pursuit of his education Henry Black attended the public schools
of Granville district and subsequently took a course in a business college.
After putting aside his textbooks he engaged in the conduct of a general
store at the village of Leonard, in Russell county, Ontario, remaining
active in that field of endeavor until 1898. From 1899 until 1902 he was
identified with the business interests of Kalso, British Columbia, and the
following year came to Regina, where he successfully devoted his atten-
tion to contracting and building. He erected many large buildings, in-
cluding the Crescent Annex apartments and the Black block, both of
which he owns, together with other property in Regina and vicinity.
Since retiring from the contracting business some years ago he has de-
voted his time to the supervision of his personal affairs.
On the 15th of December, 1910, Mr. Black was married to Miss Jennie
Lenora Barker, a daughter of Charles W. Barker. To them five children
have been born: Henry Kenneth, Charles Russell, William Franklin, Eliza-
beth Lenora and Thomas Murray. Mr. Black has always been actively
interested in civic affairs. In 1914 he was elected alderman and ably
served the city in that position through the succeeding three years, while
in 1917 he was chosen mayor, to which office he was reelected the fol-
lowing year. His service as alderman and as mayor covered the trying
period of the Great war and the time of the dreadful influenza epidemic.
In 1922 he was again elected alderman for the term of 1923-24 and is
therefore the incumbent in that position. While mayor of Regina he
served on the hospital board for two years and is also connected with
the board at the present time, having been chosen for another term of
two years. He has likewise been a member of the library board and the
assessment board. As mayor he discharged his important duties to the
entire satisfaction of his constituents, and inaugurated and brought to
completion many movements for the benefit of the community. Mr. Black
has never had time to become affiliated with any clubs and finds his greatest
pleasure in home life. He prefers raising flowers to playing golf. The
success he has achieved is the result of intelligently directed effort and
stanch determination.
