In the North West Territories the 1884 Territorial Ordinance #5 allowed for the formation of school districts. School Districts were given numbers in the order by which the areasapplied for. This sorting by School District Number then gives an idea of the NWT early settlement patterns, and school house formation by year. When Saskatchewan and Albertabecame provinces in 1905, numbers previously in use in Alberta were canceled and re-appliedto School Districts of Saskatchewan. When the two provinces were formed Alberta continued numerically incrementing from the last school District Number which was at that time Bow Valley S. D. 1409. The next one of Alberta therefore numbered was 1410. Saskatchewanthen re-used any numbers which were now not being used and therefore some School Districts may have two names attached to them...the early use of the number in Alberta, and later use in Saskatchewan. So ORANGEDALE, is the exact opposite, with the early name ORANGEDALE used in Saskatchewan 1888-1953 and then also used in Alberta 1912 on. Additionally, before Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces in 1905, the North West Territories was divided into provisional districts. The provisional district in central present-day Saskatchewan (between township 35 and township 70) was named Saskatchewan. West of this district was the provisional district of Alberta. Evolution Boundaries 1882 Atlas of Saskatchewan The western border of the provisional district extended 60 miles west of the 110 west longitude or the fourth meridian the current provincial boundary line. This means before 1905, range 3 west of the fourth meridian was included in the provisional district of Saskatchewan, North West Territories as were ranges 1 through 10 west of the fourth meridian. ORANGEDALE School District 2807, however was established in 1912, so always a part of the province of Alberta whereas ORANGEDALE School District 115 established in 1888 was initially formed in the Provisional District of Assiniboia, North West Territories (south of the provisional district of Saskatchewan).
