MORNING STAR SCHOOL DISTRICT 1701HistoryMrs. Bernice Kretsch Jackson wrote "The History of the Kretsch Family in the same book. Bernice relates that Joe Kretsch applied for his first homestead near Elbow. Elbow was located two miles west and one mile north of this farm. Starting out in a soddy, by the next year, 1907, Joe had erected a frame house. Joe's sister Mary joined him in 1906, and they were able to allow the Morning Star teacher to board with them. Joe had purchased in 1910 a quarter section of land located one mile south of Morning Star School, and that Elbow was located three miles to the west. Joe married Helen Lobsinger in 1913, and lived on Fair View Stock Farm. In 1915, Florence Lobsinger came west, and worked for them, marrying Joe's brother Pete settling south of the Morning Star school. A write up on "The Morning Star District in the book lists Fred Shumaker as the inaugural settler who arrived to the area in 1904. It was Fred who christened the school with the name of "Morning Star". As mentioned earlier, Julius Joel was the secretary on the first school board, John Carleson became the chairman, Bill Styner and Fred Schumaker were trustees. The first teacher was another pioneer in the area, Harry Dugan who opened classes with fourteen children. Marice Pederson planted Manitoba maples, poplars and carraganas in the school yard. By 1940, a teacherage was provided for the schoolhouse teachers. "Pioneering at the Elbow", a school booklet was published in 1955, the Canadian Jubilee Year. |
