MARIA HILF DISTRICT

In the 1890s immigrants of various national and cultural backgrounds began to arrive in the area. This cairn is dedicated to the memory of those first Catholic homesteaders who settled the Maria Hilf district.

The first church and cemetery built in 1900 still stand today 1 mile north and 2 miles west of here. Up until that time occasional Sunday masses were celebrated out of doors on this location.

The Oblate Fathers resided in the first church until 1906 when new churches were built at Grayson and Killaly.

This cairn was erected by the Flegel family in co-operaton with the Government of Saskatchewan.
