| Grades 5,6 and 7, Kelvington School, 1936- This picture was kindly sent to Bess Blankley by Cliff McCallum of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Isn't it humourous that "William Lyon McKeznie King Evans" in the fourth row was so endowed with names and how we all affectionately called him "Blackie"? Hope someone can fill in the missing names, also that others with school pictures will keep submitting them. A great deal of pleasure and contact have been made since the first pictures were printed. The above picture is Grades 5, 6 and 7, 1936. Could any of us forget Mr James who guided so many students with his firm R.R. & R. and his singing skills? Dear Webmaster: One of my siblings recently sent me the URL of your page from Kelvington SK, including the picture of the middle school classes of 1936. My mother is Katharine Titof Metlay. She will be turning 92 in 2 weeks and was in the high school in Kelvington in 1936. Her two younger siblings, Leon Titof and Julie Titof are shown in the picture. I showed the picture to my mother and she had a grand time reminiscing. She recognized many names, but had more anecdotes about the families than about the individuals in that picture. She did note that about half the boys in the rear row of the photo were killed in WW II, including her brother, who was a flyer and was shot down over Hanover in 1943. Mom remembers Fred Olifkey as the school Janitor. The teacher in the picture, Mr. James, was her favorite English teacher. She credits him with inspiring her love of poetry. He was a Welshman and also directed the choir. My grandfather, David Titof, owned a general store which I think was called Kelvington Supply. Mom says that during the depression the teachers were not payed very regularly and her father would let them have what they needed on credit. He had to close the store in 1939 and move his family to Flin Flon, Manitoba, to work with his brother in law. If I get any other anecdotes from mom, I'll pass them along. Leon Metlay Rochester, NY |
