HARRISLAND School District # 3659 NW quarter section 3, township 4- range 16-West of the 3rd meridian Bracken One last photo from the collection of Florence Tallman Ryder. Harrisland students Viola and Eunice Benson with their dog and their pony Joker (1945). The summer before the Benson girls were to start at Harrisland, their parents got them a pony, Joker, and arranged for them to ride back and forth to Grampa Benson's farm - which was near the school. The idea was that they would get used to the pony, and the pony would get used to taking them to school. It didn't quite work out as planned. On the first day of classes, Eunice and Viola set out on Joker and headed for school. When they got to Grampa's place the plan fell apart. Joker had no intention of going to school - he wasn't trained to go to school, he was trained to go to Grampa's - and that was just what he intended to do! He parked himself in the farmyard and refused to take another step. The Harrisland students had a good laugh that morning, when Grampa pulled up in front of the school and unloaded Joker from the back of his truck. ![]() Bracken Tsp 3 Range 16 W3 From Waghorn's railway guide 1941
