Harringay School District No. 1864[sic] ** was built with a hard wood floor in 1906, on two acres of land. The school district comprised an area of four miles by four miles square on sections 3 to 10 and 15 to 22 in township 42, range 14, west of the third meridian. The school house was centrally located for the children resident in the area. The Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR) ran through the north east segment of the school district, and the North Saskatchewan River made up the southern boundary. The CNoR arrived in Lucerne (Ruddell) in 1904. The construction of the rail line began in 1911, and the CNoR opened on December 15, 1913, and it could initially be accessed on NE section 25 township 42 range 12 W3 where a loading platform was located. This was later moved to Lilac between Denholm and Lilac. A station was erected in 1913. CNoR merged with the Canadian National Railway (CN) in 1923. Denholm was located to the north west, and Ruddell to the east, both located on the CNR line. Baljennie was located to the south across the Saskatchewan River on the telegraph line between Battleford and Saskatoon. Ruddell SD 1588, Denholm SD 1916, Roecliffe SD 2360 and Blenheim SD 1917 were neighbouring school districts. Miss Stacy from Ontario was hired as the first teacher. The early school years were "Summer School", teachers arriving in the spring when the roads were passable, to board with a local homesteader and leaving for school in the fall. In the 1955-1956 school year, the school was closed, re-opening for the next year. The school closed permanently at the end of June 1959. The school builiding itself was sold to N. Krilow in 1969. Betty Mohler recalled that the school has been torn down. The school yard is now worked along with the soil from the adjoining field. Before Harringay was constructed, pupils attended Ellastone School. Mohler remembered that although, there were not enough children to warrant keeping the school open, the school district served over 30 children during the 1930s. The gravel No. 5 Highway had followed the surveyed townships and ran on the "Square". Between 1950-1970 this Provincial Highway No. 5 replaced by Saskatchewan Highway No. 16, the "Yellowhead Route" a straightened and paved highway parallel to the railway tracks. Article compiled by J.
