Location north of Dysart, SK - SW section 04-township 24- range 15 West of the 2nd meridian (Rural Municipality OF LIPTON NO. 217 ). Gardiner school was built July 1915. First school teacher is show in the picture in the photo is Ion "John" Axenty - Birth 26 JAN 1891 in Cuciurul-Mare, Bukowina, Austria-Hungary, Death 20 DEC 1974 in Redondo Beach, Los Angeles Co, California. (adult standing on the right) Date of the photograph is recorded as August 15, 1915. Receiving a note from Tommy Henrich, he related that John Axenty was his Great-Grandmother's oldest brother. The date on the pics are from August, 1915 and it is his understanding that John Axenty was the first school teacher to teach in the newly errected schoolhouse in Dysart. The image was posted originally online by Tommy Henrich and he kindly granted permission to re-use the image on the Saskatchewan One Room Schoolhouse Project. Thank you kindly. |
GARDINER SCHOOL #3428In the local history book, Dysart & district : yesterday & today : Radant, Sambor, Kronsberg, Canterbury, Westlea, Gardiner, Parkland, McDonald Hills "Volume 1", an article written by Hector Hambly notes that the pioneers assembled in 1914 for the purposes of establishing a school district. When classes began, John Axenty was the teacher in the spring of 1915. The school closed in 1960, and students were thenceforth bussed into Dysart for classes. The school was sold to the Gardiner Community Club. Neighouring schools in the area were MCDONALD HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT 1646 and DYSART SCHOOL DISTRICT 1449.
