Boxmoor School: A Legacy of Education and Community

Boxmoor School District No. 4051 came into existence on June 1, 1918, located on the northwest corner of the northwest quarter of Section 11, Township 32, Range 8, West of the Second Meridian. The establishment of this rural school district marked a significant milestone in the community’s growth, as settlers sought to provide educational opportunities for their children. In the spring of 1918, the local community came together to discuss the establishment of a school, with several meetings held to rally support and formalize the project.

The first teacher at Boxmoor was Miss Margaret Patton, and the first trustees who oversaw the creation of the school were Joe Currah, who served as chairman, George Churchill as secretary, and William Davies as trustee. Their combined efforts ensured that the school would open in the fall of 1918. The community's input also played a role in naming the school; a secret ballot was held to choose between several names, including Vimy Ridge, Silverdale, Spring Creek, and Brownsville. Boxmoor was ultimately selected, named after an estate in England, a fitting tribute to the area’s early settlers.

Construction of the school building was authorized on July 15, 1918, with the goal of having it ready to open by September 16 of that same year. The school served as a central hub of learning and community life for the children of the area, providing education for the growing population. However, in 1924, the boundaries of the district shifted with the creation of Mainroad School District #4536. Mainroad, located to the south of Boxmoor, along with nearby schools such as Bellenden and Stony View, influenced the population distribution and boundaries of Boxmoor School.

The arrival of Canora Larger School Unit No. 37 in the mid-1950s further altered the educational landscape. With fewer students enrolling in Boxmoor, many children were bused to the schools in Rama or Invermay. As enrollment dropped, it became clear that the future of Boxmoor School was uncertain. On June 30, 1958, the last day of classes was held, marking the end of an era for the school.

After its closure, the building and the teacherage were relocated four miles southeast of Dobrowdy School and renamed Dobrowdy South. The Dobrowdy South School, District No. 2637, was established on a two-acre lot in 1960, located on the southwest corner of Section 3, Township 33, Range 7, West of the Second Meridian. Unfortunately, even with this new location, the school’s time was short-lived. The last class at Dobrowdy South was held during the 1965-1966 school year.

Following its closure, the building was sold and repurposed for use as a farm shop. The lands of Dobrowdy South were later transferred to the Invermay School District No. 1284 on April 10, 1973, bringing the final chapter to the history of Boxmoor and Dobrowdy South Schools. Though the physical schools no longer remain, the legacy of Boxmoor’s educational history and its role in fostering community spirit lives on in the memories of those who were a part of it.

The story of Boxmoor School is one of perseverance and adaptation—a reflection of the rural communities of Saskatchewan that, through shared effort and commitment, built a strong foundation for generations to come.
