Clearing Land:
Observe the details of the dress of the men at work in contrast to that of the Loyalist pioneers. Those in this illustration belong to the later immigration of the eighteen twenties and thirties, as shown by the stiff high-crowned hats of felt or straw, the loose corduroy trousers, tied below the knee, and the ankle high boots.
Graphic desciptions of the burning of the log heaps are given in the books by Mrs. Moodie, Mrs. Traill, Major Strickland, and other writers.
