JOHN M. VAREY.
 



	John M. Varey, district superintendent of the Soldiers Settlement
Board, with offices on the third floor of the Connaught building, Saska-
toon, was born in Grey district, Ontario, in January, 1889, a son of Robert
and Mary (Kennedy) Varey, natives of the province of Ontario.  In
early life the father engaged in agricultural pursuits in Grey county and
became successful. He is now living retired at Thombury, Ontario. Mrs.
Varey died on the 10th of November, 1911.
	In the pursuit of his early education John M. Varey attended the rural
schools of Grey district and subsequently entered the Agricultural Col-
lege in Toronto, graduating with the class of 1916.  While an under-
graduate Mr. Varey surveyed for the department of physics of the
Ontario Agricultural College and was assistant district representative of
Simcoe county, Ontario, for seventeen months. He attended the University
of Edinburgh, Scotland, taking special work in agriculture and while a
student there he made a thorough tour of England and Scotland in con-
nection with agriculture.  In March, 1916, Mr. Varey put all personal
interests aside and enlisted with the University Battery for service in
the Great war. In August, 1916, he sailed overseas and participated in
the principal battles, beginning with Hill 70.  He received the Distin-
guished Service Medal and was honorably discharged on the 27th of July,
1919.  Mr. Varey then accepted the position of field supervisor for the
Soldiers Settlement Board at Toronto and had served in that capacity
some eight months when, in April, 1920, he was transferred to Saska-
toon and was made superintendent of the Soldiers Settlement Board here
in July, 1922.
	On the 5th of March, 1923, Mr. Varey was married to Miss Hazel A.
Falls, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Falls, natives of Grey
district, Ontario, where Mrs. Varey was born, in March, 1893.  Fra-
ternally Mr. Varey is identified with the Masons and he holds member-
ship in the Canadian Club and the City Golf Club.  His religious faith
is that of the Methodist church. Mr. Varey maintains an active interest
in civic affairs and has been helpful in the promotion of many movements
for the benefit of the community.
