ALEXANDER K. THOM.
One of the leading citizens of Wadena, Saskatchewan, is Alexander
K. Thom, publisher and owner of the Wadena Herald. He was born in
Grey county, Ontario, on the 16th of February, 1871, a son of Archibald
and Sarah (Gordon) Thom. The father came west and secured a home-
stead, on which he resided for a time. Later, however, he disposed of
the land and returned to Sandridge, where he was engaged in the news-
paper business until his death. He was a prominent citizen of that town
and was a dominant factor in its development and improvement.
In the pursuit of his education Alexander K. Thom attended the pub~
lic schools of his birthplace and in 1891 came west and located in Mani-
toba, in the Morden district. He remained there until 1902, when he
came to the province of Saskatchewan and settled at Quill Lake. He
homesteaded near there and remained on the farm until 1908, in which
year he moved into Wadena, where he has since resided. He immediately
embarked in the newspaper business upon taking up residence here and
is sole owner and publisher of the Wadena Herald, an up-to-date news-
paper. For six years Mr. Thom served on the Board of Public Works and
the town council and through his paper he has been influential in the up-
building of Wadena and the district.
In 1898 Mr. Thom was married to Miss Anne McNiven, a native of
Ontario, and they have four children: Mary, who is now the wife of Earl
Smith; Edith, Isabella and George. The religious faith of Mr. Thorn is
that of the Union church, and fraternally he is identified with the Inde-
pendent Order of Odd Fellows.
