
WILLIAM JOHN RUTHERFORD, B. S. A.
Since 1909 William John Rutherford has been dean of agriculture in
the University of Saskatchewan and he is widely known throughout the
Dominion for his work as an educator. He was born on the 7th of Janu-
ary, 1868, his father being of Scotch descent and his mother Scotch-Irish.
William John Rutherford received his early education in the rural
schools in the vicinity of the home farm and subsequently graduated from
high school. For a time he attended the Agricultural College at Guelph,
Ontario, and upon the completion of his education he taught in the rural
schools for eight years. He was a teacher of animal husbandry at Iowa
Agricultural College, Ames, Iowa, from 1903 until 1906; at the Manitoba
Agricultural College from 1906 to 1908; and he became Deputy Minister
of Agriculture for Saskatchewan in 1908, holding that office until 1910.
In 1909 he was made dean of agriculture of the University of Saskatche-
wan at Saskatoon. He is a member of the Dominion Conservation Com-
mission, the Saskatchewan Educational Commission, the advisory
committee on public schools of agriculture and the Educational domicile
for the reeducation of disabled soldiers. Mr. Rutherford writes many
articles for the Agriculture for Public Schools publication.
In 1904 Mr. Rutherford was married to Miss Anna C. Bow and they
have two sons and three daughters. For recreation from his confining
duties as an educator Mr. Rutherford plays lawn bowling and chess and
spends a great deal of time in gardening.
