WILLIAM DICK DEWAR.
William Dick Dewar, manager of the Soldiers' Civil Reestablishment
Bureau, with offices in the Canada building, is one of the highly esteemed
citizens of Saskatoon. He was born in Dundee, Scotland, on the 14th of
June, 1880, a son of James and Elizabeth (Cuthill) Dewar, likewise na-
tives of Scotland. The father was a mechanical engineer by profession
and remained in the old country throughout his life. His death occurred
in 1898, and Mrs. Dewar passed away in 1918.
In the pursuit of his education William Dick Dewar attended the
public and high schools of Dundee and subsequently entered the Harris
Academy and St. Andrew's University. Upon the completion of his edu-
cation he became associated with a chocolate manufacturing concern
for three years and in 1903 came to Canada. He went to work for the
Union Bank of Canada and remained there 'until he was transferred to
Moose Jaw. He rose from the position of ledger keeper to that of ac-
countant and so served at Moose Jaw until 1907, when he was again
transferred, this time to Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, as manager of the
firm's business there. He remained in Strasbourg from 1907 until De-
cember of the year 1911, when he was transferred to Humboldt. He
was manager of the business there until 1915, when he put all personal
interests aside and enlisted with the Two Hundred and Fourteenth Regi-
ment for service in the Great war. He went to England a short time
after enlisting and was pay sergeant until he was drafted into the audit-
ing department in England. He remained there until October, 1918,
when he went to France and was in the same department in that country
until June, 1919, leaving France on the 18th of January, 1920, at which
time he received his honorable discharge. Subsequently he returned to
Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and was actively identified with the insurance
business there until December, 1921, when he came to Saskatoon, and
on the 14th of February, 1922, accepted a position as clerk in the Soldiers'
Civil Reestablishment Bureau. He is now manager of the local bureau
and is satisfactorily discharging the manifold duties of his position. He
is a man of diligence, integrity and upright principles and is held in high
confidence and esteem by his fellow townsmen.
In March, 1907, Mr. Dewar was married to Miss Eliza M. Duncan,
and they have become parents of two children: William Alexander, born
in Strasbourg, in August, 1910; and Stuart, born in Humboldt, on the
11th of March, 1916. Mrs. Dewar is a woman of culture and refinement
and she maintains an active interest in the club and social circles of
Saskatoon.
Mr. Dewar has always been active in civic affairs and was vice presi-
dent of the Humboldt Board of Trade in 1913 and president of that
body in 1914. He has also been a commissioner and justice of the peace
and no movement for the benefit of the community at large seeks his aid
in vain. Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows and he likewise holds membership in the Sons of Scotland and
the Great War Veterans Association. His religious faith is that of the
Presbyterian church. Mr. Dewar's career in Saskatoon, although short,
has been highly successful and well illustrates the power of energy and
hard work.
